Does it place into biglaw similarly to a T14? For texas, most TLSers say to choose UT over most of the T14. Is it really that strong of a school?

Yes, and the bastards rejected me today, though I don't really want to practice in the South anyway.

Is the University of Texas close to a T14 school? The conclusive answer is no.

It's over 1,000 miles to the nearest T14 on the west coast: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... 277344&z=4

It's over 1,000 miles to the nearest T14 on the east coast:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... e=UTF8&z=4

And it's over 1,000 miles to the nearest T14 between the coasts:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... 138672&z=5

Conclusively, this demonstrates that the University of Texas is not close to a T14 law school.

According to the most recent stats no. Maybe Texas just had a lot of students clerk....

Prestige wise I'd say it's pretty much same as most T14 schools (in the south at least).

Though I'm no expert on this, I think the Texas > T14 (to firms in Texas) thing is a big overblown. Firms here adore T14 students. There are so few of them who want to work here that they rare commodities. In talking with one HR manager person at a big firm in Houston, the first thing out of her mouth was that they were "Pleased with their summer class; we've got a few people from Harvard." So you can take that for what it's worth.

Texas does kill the state, though, because there are so many BigLaw jobs here and such little competition relative to other big markets. It's also an awesome school.

But who actually wants to live IN Texas? I couldn't wait to leave. I didn't stay one second longer than I had to when the Army told me I was free to go.

Grass is always greener elsewhere, my friend. I moved here from South Carolina. I may leave, but I wouldn't mind staying here. There's a lot to like about Texas, even if you don't realize it. Not having to shovel snow is a plus. Not paying state income tax is a plus. Generally reasonable real estate prices, even in prime areas, is a plus. I could go on, but you get the idea.

These are all things I didn't appreciate until I moved north. Also, it's impossible to find real Tex-Mex style food up here anywhere.

Related to OPs question: which schools in the T14 would you take over UT if you wanted Biglaw in Texas?

I don't think anyone here is saying that Texas is worse than North Carolina. But, fortunately, that is not the extent of the choice in the 'merica.

Everyone from southern California just laughed at real and Tex-Mex appearing next to each other

Serious answer: every T14 school, with the possible exception of Michigan, places its graduates disproportionately into NYC and DC. UT is a regional school. That isn't to say that UT isn't perhaps a much safer choice than GULC. But it's not in the position to be a T14 school and probably never will be (If any up-and-coming LS could displace Gtown, it's probably Vanderbilt).

Your post missed the mark on about 5 different levels.

FWIW, North Carolina is a place where people should want to live.

I've lived within a few miles of West Texas or the High Plains for the last twenty-odd years, within thirty miles of El Paso since 1994. UT Austin places very well everywhere in Texas and there's a lot of law going on in Texas. Nevertheless...I've been eligible to waive into the Texas Bar for a gazillion years now. I have a barely-started application rotting in my desk drawer. I just cannot bring myself to do it. Texas is a polarizing place. Either you are in love with the whole idea or you tend to hate Texans, Texas, and anything with a single white star on it. Don't know why.

Speaking as objectively as a New Mexican can on this subject, Texas is a genuine Land of Opportunity. It is also, in many places, stunningly beautiful and endlessly interesting from a cultural or historic standpoint. The state has a population nearing 20 million so you can run into just about any sort of person there (I once attended a Hindu wedding reception in Seminole Texas) and is so huge that you can find any kind of landscape except the Alpine. (They think they have mountains but they don't, not really.)

Truth? If I were just starting out and my spouse didn't hate Texas, I'd put the state, and UT Austin, very high on the list.

Oh, and we New Mexicans laugh at "real Tex-Mex" too but we also laugh at the efforts of SoCal to produce anything resembling good green chile sauce. It's really CHIHUAHUAN cuisine, you know, and no one outside of Chihuahua or N.Mex. ever seems to get it right. Well, El Paso, of course, but we think of them as being honorary New Mexicans. :)
