I can see how they would rank wisconsin that high. It's a premier research university and it has a lot more departments/schools than Duke. It has quality and quantity. These rankings aren't just undergrad or anything like that. But if Wisconsin's up there. I'd be curious to see where Berkeley, Michigan and UVA are sitting.

Yeah I know I'm being a bum and I was watching basketball. That's crazy though. Berkeley at number 4? UCLA at 12 and Michigan at 13. That's crazy.AreJay711 wrote:Follow the link?Non-Chalant1 wrote:I can see how they would rank wisconsin that high. The fact that Virginia didn't even crack the list would blow the minds of half the people in the commonwealth.Non-Chalant1 wrote:Yeah I know I'm being a bum and I was watching basketball. ND sucks at research. It doesn't emphasize it, and it lacks the part of a university that brings in the research recognition: a medical school.trayball23 wrote:No Notre Dame? yikes
That said, this list is bizarre. ARWU does a much better job.

Looks pretty similar actually.
I actually prefer the Times. Think its more accurate.
Keep in mind these are the "Global reputation." Great liberal arts colleges like Williams would barely register on the global scene. Why would it? It caters to a small, mostly domestic elite population. We're talking about global footprint, so its no surprise to see the major universities with huge alumni bases and tons of research heavily represented.

They evaluate the quality of education by counting the number of alumni who won Nobel and Fields. They also evaluate the quality of the faculty by the numbers of the staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields. This is fucked up on so many levels.danquayle wrote:http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp

At least two very important factors are not considered: 1. how rich is the university (endowment), 2. How loyal is the alumni base (donation rate).

Like I said... it's global reputation. It's not speaking about quality or selectiveness or anything like that. What we're essentially talking about is brand penetration. I'm not surprised quantity matters more than quality in that regard.ThreeYears wrote:They evaluate the quality of education by counting the number of alumni who won Nobel and Fields. How do those things have ANYTHING to do with global reputation?ThreeYears wrote:They evaluate the quality of education by counting the number of alumni who won Nobel and Fields. They point at a lot of other things... research capability, success of alumni, implicitly success in finding and educating the right people, ability to hire quality professors, etc...
But not global brand penetration. Like I said, we're not talking about quality but rather reputation here. There's a difference.

You mean... "El Heat"?FeelTheHeat wrote:Midnight, I think. Love to see what happens to UF/FSU/UM.Barbie wrote:Tomorrow, right?? I'm excited!
How ridiculous is it that the NBA thinks adding "El" and "Los" to the team names on the uniform is somehow going to appeal more strongly to Hispanic viewers. I'd kind of be insulted...
