People choosing Cardozo over St. John's: is that because of the stipulations? I'm leaning toward Cardozo myself but I'd like to hear more input

I didn't vote, but I'd imagine it's because Cardozo>Brooklyn>>>SJU.

A scholarship with a top 40% stipulation is not a scholarship at all. Dozo easily unless Brooklyn makes a blockbuster offer.

Updated this with my final info- Brooklyn is going to offer $30k with a 40% stip (but it is graduated, they give you less and less as you slip down the rankings like St. John's does, unlike Seton Hall which was all or nothing). American offered a first year only $10k so that is definitely not happening.

What do you get at SJ and Brooklyn if you are smack in the middle of the class after the first year?

The way SJU scholarships work (this year anyway) is

top 40%- Keep 100%
top 55%- Keep 75%
top 65%- Keep 50%

Stipulations are a scam. Go to Cardozo--it sounds like you have a refreshingly realistic grasp of your prospects, and I wish you luck.

As an aside, it's my hope that enough people will seek advice about stipulations here (and subsequently reject such offers) that schools will stop trying that crap.

Anyway, for the OP, if you're an average student, the scholly is only about 8K per year more than Dozo's, so I would go with Dozo since the money is outweighed by the slightly better job placement in NYC Biglaw and the way better area to spend three years.

It's top 40% class rank. And yeah, it's end of academic year + first year = full ride no matter what.

It's an offer I'm considering as well, against some half-schollies at a few midwestern schools ranked in the 20s. Even though I'm pretty confident I can rank >40%, I know I can't just take it for granted. The fact that the other scholarships have just standard "good standing" requirements and are from schools with slightly lower COL's really kind of closes the financial gap a bit. Only real issue I have is being a NYC guy who's not sure he can sign on for living in the midwest for potentially a very long time.

What about Buffalo?

I really wouldn't consider Buffalo a NYC/NJ school

The midwestern schools ranked in the 20s are Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, Notre Dame, Minn, UIUC. Seems to me that in the NYC area, SJ places as well or better than those with the possible exception of ND, and that outside the NYC area, they all place better than SJ. So it all comes down to where you want to work, I guess. Just my 2 cents even though you didn't ask for advice.
