Which is the better choice, being an in-state student and able to take advantage of instate tuition, ASSUMING I want BigLaw. I know Duke/any T14 is the clear choice all things equal but is the ~120k premium worth it?

If you're BigLaw or bust, yes.

Edit: Also, what's up with everyone suddenly going crazy for Duke?

It's their second round ED.

It's like the Yukon after the gold rush.

That, plus OP is from NC, so there's also the slight convenience factor. Not saying that this is a total game changer, but easier than say, up and moving to Cali for getting into one of their top schools.

If you're deadset on BigLaw, then Duke is the choice. Median at Duke will get you there, while at UNC you'd need to be roughly top 15%.

You guys are so luck there in the US.

In Belgium, where I am from, about 5 to 7 % make it to a BigLaw firm. And, it is not like we have a shortage of those in Brussels :D which is the largest lawyers city in the EU :)

UNC is the safer, more rational choice.

Duke is the riskier, "biglaw or bust" choice.

If you want the optimal decision it's probably UNC.
