From USNWR, Georgetown is ranked first in clinical training, sixth in environmental law, seventh in healthcare law, third in international law, first in part-time law, second in tax law, and fifth in trial advocacy, which puts it top 10 in 7 of the 10 USNWR subcategories. It has great lay prestige, famous faculty, and it's in the middle of bloody Washington DC for crying out loud. So how come it's only ranked 14th overall?

Some of this reasoning is a bit off. Location actually plays a large part in the rankings--that's one of the main reasons why NYU is ranked so highly. On top of that, not every school has amazing faculty. NYU's faculty is one of the main reasons (if not the main reason) why they jumped into the top 6 of US News and stayed there. Berkeley's ranking is largely a result of their stellar faculty as well.bk187 wrote:Specialty rankings don't mean shit.
Lay prestige doesn't mean anything.
Everywhere has amazing faculty.
Being in DC is irrelevant.
These would be reasons why Georgetown is 14 and not 25 or 30, but not reasons why Georgetown is 14 and not 12 or 6 or 8.BruceWayne wrote:Some of this reasoning is a bit off. This is the real reason since US News really doesn't make employment prospects a big part of the rankings. The main thing they use is LSAT/GPA ratios, selectivity, and faculty quality. It just happens that those factors correlate pretty well with career prospects--until you get into the top 17 schools--where their correlation drops a bit.dextermorgan wrote:Because there are 13 schools that game the rankings better.
Use your brain and try to figure out why Yale, Harvard, and Stanford's part time programs aren't ranked better than Georgetown's.Lovely Ludwig Van wrote:LOL. Yeah, I know, huh? That was pretty funny, wasn't it. Funny enough to go through the trouble of underlining that shit, typing 'lol,' and hitting 'submit.' It was a joke, but the main point of this is that specialty rankings mean nothing and that GULC might be higher if it were able to raise its medians (which it probably struggles to do due to class size).Lovely Ludwig Van wrote:I asked about GULC's overall rankings. Not it's part-time. I was merely quoting USWNR. If it'll make that much of a difference to you, I'll edit my original post to suit your preferences.
First of all, specialised rankings don't count for shit in the legal world. You'll get preference in any specialized field based on overall ranking only.Lovely Ludwig Van wrote:Silly question, I know. But still, I would like to hear what people think. Thanks for the constructive response. That explains a lot. I had a feeling most of it came down to biglaw placement.Veyron wrote:First of all, specialised rankings don't count for shit in the legal world. That being said, Georgetown suffers from (1) relatively recent accendancy - judges and older practitioners are often not familiar with its high ranking (2) piss poor biglaw placement, its really more of a school for people who want to go into government work. However, if you DO want to work on the hill or something, I could see picking Georgetown over any school but H and Y.
