No one in my family works in law. This is an honest question. I really don't know. Is it the money? Is it the prestige? Level of client? Other?

I'd love to see some stats.

On a serious note, it's the money and the hours and the number of lawyers employed by the firm (I think, though I be relatively uninformed compared to most of the board).

I think the Big in BigLaw refers to the size of the firms (the number of lawyers, the number of offices).

Nope.. Its a combo of things, such as, pay, type of cases, type of client, hours, asthetic of office, prestige, etc.

For instance, Wilson Elser has like 1000 attorney... It is NOT a biglaw firm.

Nope. Not big enough in head count...

Biglaw just means law firms with over 400/500 attorneys. They pay the most and they do high end legal work for big companies. There are some boutiques that are still prestigious but not "biglaw."

No idea. Haven't heard that one in a long time, for some reason the term "Big Tymers" flashed through my head when I saw this thread.

It's probably not just the money, I'd say it's more for the options after you want to leave. I don't think most people stay in biglaw longer than a few years, but after that, people can usually go wherever they want (in-house, government, midlaw firms, public interest, etc.) After getting a judicial clerkship, it's the best possible starting step to one's career.

Some would consider single major-market (NYC/Chi/LA) market paying firms with 200+ attorneys to be "biglaw" (ex. Wachtell), buts its an arbitrary designation anyway.
