General advice/thoughts

2.9/163/167/Dec
Chemistry, Chemical Engr, North Carolina State (top 30 chem engr school)
MA Chemistry, Hopkins

There's no doubt in my mind I can get to 170 in Dec. There are very particular reasons for that 167 (163 is without preparation). I am reasonably confident I can hit 173 if all goes smoothly.

I am going to hedge my bets and go into IP, specifically into patents. From an economics standpoint there appear to be fewer attorneys eligible (or willing to become eligible) to pass the patent bar relative to the number of such positions.

I have submitted 3 applications. Two of them are reaches because I underperformed my Oct LSAT. I applied to UNHSL (Franklin Pierce) hoping to get some money for my LSAT. I applied to George Mason and American PT because of their proximity to a strong IP market and the ability to go part-time while still working as a scientist. Since I was expecting a 17x I thought I'd be a lock for those 2, but now it looks uncertain.

Thoughts?

You could retake but it's going to be of limited help with that GPA. I would just apply early to where you think you can get in and get some top-notch grades once in law school.

where do you want to practice? once you know that, blanket your market area schools and compare the cost/ benefit and go with your best bet.

if you dont like how your cycle goes, sign up for the june test, and nail it. then apply with your 170+ on october 1 2011.

break 170, apply to Northwestern

if you break 170 and don't get into a T-14, re-apply next year through early decision

Dude, what? Your 167 will get you into better schools than that. You've got a shot at Illinois, GW, WUSTL, and the rest of the T30 for full time right now. If you're determined to do PT, apply to GW and GTown, not American and GM. You may need a retake for GTown PT, but you're at GW's full time median. You can (and should) do better. The demand for patent lawyers isn't that high.

Look at his 2.9 gpa.

They're splitter-friendly schools. If he was on the west coast he'd be SOL, but a 2.9 is not an absolute bar to entry. If he hits at least a 168 on the retake, I'll guarantee acceptance to at least one of the T30, and more likely 3-5.

Don't put all your hopes on that . . . Hard science is necessary for a lot of IP, but it most certainly doesn't make hard IP a guarantee.

Idk how this really works but I'd imagine your GPA does not mean as much with a PhD. Of course, I hear that schools are bigger number whores than they let on but a PhD > 4.0 in undergrad hands down for everyone outside of an admissions office.
