If I ran a law school...

Post by InLikeFlint » Wed Oct 27, 2010 12:46 pm

YCrevolution got his panties in a bunch and locked my last thread because it wasn't in the appropriate forum, so I'll post it here.

If I ran a law school, I would cut costs anywhere possible to vastly reduce how much tuition the school relies on to operate. Next, I wouldn't actually change the tuition listed, but offer every accepted student a scholarship (by whatever margin you could reduce costs). By competing based on price, a school could absolutely get much higher quality students, then rise in the rankings, then ???, then PROFIT.

Why hasn't anyone thought of this?

This thread is sad and that you think this is a legitimate discussion is even sadder.

To help disabuse you of this stupid notion, do you even know what goes into the USNWR rankings? And even if you did somehow manage to get high in the rankings, it wouldn't automatically make your graduates employable. Even further, you do realize that crappy schools are immensely profitable despite not going up in the rankings? What incentive is there to go up in the rankings like this when you are already rolling in dough?

EDIT: And the tuition thing isn't all that different from what UCI is doing (on top of some other key things like getting great professors and trying really hard to get their early grads employed).

Thank you for the helpful answer, unlike bk187, who is just trying to derail my thread.

I would build a massive library (and fill it with thousands of unnecessary books), give fee waivers to everyone to boost my selectivity, provide law library jobs to all of my jobless grads, and rely heavily on splitters.

What if you did what Michigan is doing re: letting people with high gpas not take the lsat. Then offer a full ride to one kid who scored in the 170's and list that as your lsat for the 25th, median, and 75th?

I have 5 mins... so I'll humor this:

How will you pay your staff/faculty? With unicorn tears? How about Koala turds?

The best staff/faculty will gravitate to the highest-paid, highest-prestige(correlation, ftw!) and you'll get stuck with Florida Coastal.

Dumbest idea, ever. Except getting a Mac and justifying it with how "thin" it is - but that's another thread.

Totally know someone who selected her Mac based on just that fact.
