Top Law Schools

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows if you can pursue a joint Ph.D in Economics and a JD at George Mason - I cannot find any info on it on the website. Would it be possible to be working on a Ph. D at Mason and be in the Part time JD program at Georgetown? Any and all advice about JD PhD in Econ would be greatly appreciated.

What are your career goals? If you are interested in teaching then it could prove to be useful, although I would be very careful about which schools you select for each program (the academic market tends to be very snobby).

I want to practice law, but I also want to research & publish. Not really looking to be a prof.

Within legal publications there doesn't seem to be much of a stigma attached to just having a JD and not a Doctor of Laws degree. So if you want to publish in the legal field, you will just need to put in some hard work and make the right connections. I wouldn't bother getting a PhD in econ in that instance.

If you want to publish in economics journals it may be more difficult. I am not sure exactly why you would want to publish in economics journals without being a professor or in a similar position (think tank, etc..) though. Finding a coauthor as a "hobby" economist would be difficult.

I know Vanderbilt has a JD/Econ PhD program, but I was under the impression that Vandy was the only one offering the program. Obviously, I could be wrong on that, and maybe it is just that Vandy was the first...

I'm pretty sure GMU only offers an Llm in law & economics; don't believe they offer a joint program like Vandy.

Some schools let you cross enroll in other departments which can help you pick up any deficiencies in your understanding of economics. All you'd really need beyond an undergrad level econ to publishing some law and econ oriented work would be a core micro and econometrics course at the graduate level. I guess a little more might be helpful, especially for academic economists to take you seriously (lol at that). Still, you could absolutely teach yourself to a grad level with the just very basics from core mico and econometrics classes taken formally.

Yeah, basically imagine if Yale Law only took 25-35 people per year. One of the rare things that makes me glad I'm interested in Law School.

As a complete side note: I actually talked to a partner in the international division at a big firm in NYC. He said the international law does exist... for graduates of Harvard, Yale, and a few from NYU.
