Does UChicago have the same appeal as Ivy League schools?

What do you mean by "appeal"?

If you mean rankings, then yes it's more highly ranked than Cornell and Penn, but not as high as Yale, Harvard, and Columbia.

Ivy League is an athletic conference, doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the school (although everything school in the Ivy League is excellent). As far as law school goes, Yale>Harvard>Chicago>Penn>Cornell.

Does Chicago have the same appeal to law law firms? Yes.

Does Chicago have the same appeal to the opposite sex? Not even close.

I want to stay in Atlanta to work so I was just curious if going to UChicago would inhibit me from doing that, my pre-law advisor said it could but I just wanted a second opinion.

He's very very wrong. As someone familiar with the Atlanta market trust me on this. However, I will say that unlike other areas of the country, Chicago won't really do anything special for you that UVA or Duke wouldn't in Atlanta.

Would it be any worse than UVA or Duke? I would have free room and board at Chicago so thats something I have to consider. It's also ranked higher than UVA or Duke so it has that going for it.

Because you have ties to Atlanta it really won't matter. It sounds like you would like to go to Chicago so go there, and if you change your mind about Atlanta Chicago is a stronger school for other markets.

I was on Michigan Avenue some weeks ago while the Writing Competition was still going on and attempting to read through the package. A little girl at the next table started coming over and wanted to play. Her mother told her not to bother me with my homework, and I explained it wasn't homework I was working on.

The mother asked which law school I went to. After I answered, she said, 'wow, that's really impressive. One of the best law schools in the country. Congrats.'

This to date is the only instance of a layperson knowing about my school.

All that said, don't worry - there isn't a person you'll meet in the legal profession that won't be duly impressed when you tell them where you're going to school. For that matter, a client with my firm was duly impressed some weeks ago when he found out that I go to Chi.

Laypeople are irrelevant anyway. Screw 'em.

Economics majors, ugly girls, and lawyers will all be rightly impressed. Not exactly the Harvard brand but UChi is strong where it counts (getting you a job).

Not only does it have the same appeal, but it has more of an appeal than all the Ivies in the lower T14.

On a side note, the vast majority of prelaw advisors out there are incompetent and shouldn't be listened to.

Uchi, even non-LS, has more appeal than Cornell.

Ehh Chicago is kind of controversial in Econ, its kind of a divisive/polarizing school.. a lot of economists hate "those chicago guys".

lol I suspect UC law students encounter a lot of this, at least when trying to impress undergraduates.
