Transferability of FL schools

I have looked on this site to see if this is asked, but I couldn't find it any where. I am looking at FL and LA schools. I am more attracted to FL schools because I am already here and in-state tuition is dirt cheap, but I want to end up in LA later in life and I wanted to know how my degree would transfer over there. The schools I am thinking about are: FSU, UF, Miami, Stetson (although I know this market is only really good in Tampa), Pepperdine, Loyola. What do you think?

UF doesn't have any LA firms for OCI, although that's not helpful...

What IS helpful is: go to school where you want to practice if you're not going to a school with a stellar national reputation (i.e. T14).

Ok...but I would still like to know that my FL degree would be valid in LA, if need be.

If you want to end up in LA later in life wouldnt it be easier to move to LA to attend school rather than trying to lateral from FL to CA?

It seems that you'll be fine, but if you have any doubts consult your local bar ass'n.

Here is the pertinent language:
Louisiana Committee on Bar Admissions wrote:SECTION 3. Requisites for Admission to the Bar. Every applicant for admission to the Bar of this state shall meet all of the following requirements:

(A) Have reached the age of 18 years as of the date of admission.

(B) Be a citizen of the United States or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence, or an alien otherwise authorized to work lawfully in the United States. [Amended effective January 1, 2009]

(C) Have demonstrated sound mind, good moral character and fitness to practice law in accordance with Section 5 of this Rule.

(D) Be a graduate of a law school located in the United States or its territories that is accredited by the American Bar Association as of the date on which a juris doctorate or its equivalent is conferred on the applicant. If an applicant is a graduate of a law school that is not located in the United States or its territories, such applicant must submit an application for an equivalency determination in accordance with Section 6 of this Rule.

(E) Have submitted a written certification of graduation and fitness by the dean or chancellor of the law school from which the applicant graduated.

(F) Satisfactorily complete the written examination as provided in Sections 7 and 8 of this Rule.

(G) Submit an application for admission to the Bar, request the preparation of a character report in accordance with Section 4 of this Rule, and pay the applicable fees as provided in the Appendix of this Rule. [Amended effective August 1, 2008]

Yeah I'm sure it would be, but it is sooo expensive to go to school and live in LA. Especially when the schools I am looking at in LA are ranked the same or lower than some of the ones in FL

this is not going to change and your prospects coming from FL to LA will likely not be big $$ opportunities unless you have contacts in SoCal.

The primary factor for me leaving Orange County, CA for FL is the cost of living and my wife and I both make pretty good money.

I don't know if this matters to you, but I'm under the impression that the CA bar is quite difficult to pass, AND that going to a FL school will not prepare you as well as a CA school will for it, because I assume the FL schools prepare you for the FL bar... and so forth. If you aren't worried about that, and you want to do the cheap schooling in FL, maybe try to get internships in CA for summer? I'm also worried about FL schools reaching into the GA market.

Yeah that was the kind of thing I was thinking of. I was thinking that I wouldn't be prepared for the bar there and would have to do a lot of studying and such (besides the already obvious studying) for the CA bar. I have no idea what do. I am going to apply to both CA and FL schools and see who accepts me with $$. I would think ranked FL schools have the potential to reach into the GA market...? maybe not.

I'm hoping so. I have some contacts in GA, but most of my fam is in corporate law. I sent you a PM to ask about FSU!
