Columbia places a tiny (tiny) bit better, especially out of new york. But it's literally only a tiny bit. Columbia and NYU are, in my opinion, second only to Michigan and Virginia in terms of 'these two schools are almost completely identical in every respect'.

I decided between NYU and Columbia. Here's my advice. Visit both schools, talk to some students and (scholarships being equal) go where you feel most comfortable. If Columbia gives you 50k more in grants or vice versa, go where you'll have less debt.

If equal cost, I would go to Columbia. I think it has a lot more pull outside of NYC.

Lay prestige is an dumb unfortunate reason to choose a school. All things equal, go to the school you feel most comfortable at. (I recently made the decision between NYU and Columbia).

I think this is really subjective, but I'd go with Columbia unless NYU was offering slightly more money.

My understanding is that NYU is better for public interest and Columbia tends to house more big-firm gunner-types. I have heard from one professor who was a visiting lecturer at Columbia that the kids were extremely competitive and major grade-grubbers, but again, this is just one person's experience.

I would disagree with this. I think Columbia and Chicago are more on par in terms of opportunities for clerkships and academia later along the line; there has also been a significant amount of evidence that Columbia places MUCH better within NYC.

Which did you chose and why? PM me if necessary.
If he is knocking lay prestige, it is obvious he chose NYU. I agree with Stanford4Me, however, you have to visit both and see which one feel best for you. I loved NYU, but I felt more comfortable when I visited Columbia.

Haha, my bitterness shows =)
