Iowa does about as good of job at placing it's students into biglaw as W&L and W&M, but it's still possible you would end up in iowa after graduation.emorystud2010 wrote:Hey everyone. Here's what u need to know
-My numbers are 162 and 3.6 from top 20 undergrad.
- I just got in off the waitlist at Iowa with an 18,000 scholarship with a top 1/3 of the class requirement.
-I'm on waitlists at Emory, Wash U, BC (girlfriend going there), IUB, UC-Davis, W&M, W&L, and Illinois.
- I would like to work big law, but would be ok with mid-law or anything where I could eventually work my way up into the national political arena (which requires a job where u make good money. Please don't argue this point. That's not the point of the thread).
-I don't care about location as long as its a decently major city, which could range from New York to KC/ Indianapolis/Atlanta
-I like Iowa as a school, but the job prospects out of there kinda scare me, as well as the possibility of having to remain in Iowa.
With all this in mind, what does everyone think? Should I go to Iowa with money, hope/pray to get off the waitlist at one of the schools at sticker, or reapply early next cycle?
op has other options with his current stats.....he should have applied to florida. it's probably a much more attractive place for OP to be.Slimpee wrote:You got 18k w/ a 162/3.6?!?
I have a higher LSAT and only slightly lower gpa and I got diddly-squat...
But as for your question...i'd take Iowa and $ given your numbers unless you re-take. Good luck!
Just out of curiosity, why UF?najumobi wrote:op has other options with his current stats.....he should have applied to florida. it's probably a much more attractive place for OP to be.Slimpee wrote:You got 18k w/ a 162/3.6?!?

florida seems to come up more as a preferred destination than iowa does, UF provides access to 4-5 medium-large cities, OP wouldn't have to improve his lsat because his score (162) is already above UF's median (161). of course OP would have a worse shot at biglaw coming out of UF but i think he would prefer to risk not getting biglaw in Florida than risk being stuck in iowa for a while.rad law wrote:Just out of curiosity, why UF?najumobi wrote:op has other options with his current stats.....he should have applied to florida. it's probably a much more attractive place for OP to be.Slimpee wrote:You got 18k w/ a 162/3.6?!?

Might be worth an app. Anecdotally, I hear they're pretty stingy with money though. And gaining residency is far from assured.najumobi wrote:florida seems to come up more as a preferred destination than iowa does, UF provides access to 4-5 medium-large cities, OP wouldn't have to improve his lsat because his score (162) is already above UF's median (161).
oh gosh....i didn't think about all the law schools they have in florida.rad law wrote:Might be worth an app. Anecdotally, I hear they're pretty stingy with money though. FL legal market is hell though, plus 11 law schools in the state = supersaturated.
Dozo, Pepperdine, and American aren't worth sticker.emorystud2010 wrote:Would it be absolutely necessary to retake the lsat? I took a class for it, and was averaging in the low 160s, but i also feel like i burnt myself out a little bit. Ive never been the best of test takers (31 on act). Will turn in my apps on Sept 1st really make that much difference if i don't retake? What if i retake and get the same or +/-1 point? Btw, i turned down cardozo, pepperdine, and american (all sticker) so far, so i would have to rule out those 3 and iowa entirely if i were to reapply (which isnt a bad thing per se, but just worth mentioning)
There is no reason to reapply unless you increase the LSAT.emorystud2010 wrote:Would it be absolutely necessary to retake the lsat? You won't have to rule out the schools. I turned down a school last cycle after being admitted only to the part-time program, applied earlier in the cycle this year with the same LSAT score, and was admitted to the full-time program with a scholarship. I marginally improved my PS and DS, and included a "Why School X" essay. The schools won't hold it against you for turning down their offer if you reapply. If you aren't 100% set on attending Iowa, reapply next year.emorystud2010 wrote:Would it be absolutely necessary to retake the lsat? Judging by your screenname, you like Emory just as well. Emory has a good history of big scholarships, you might get lucky here...emorystud2010 wrote:Just got into Emory. Don't know the scholarship yet, but parents are really pushin to go there.
