Top Law Schools

Would love any and all opinions on this program - I am not looking for BIGLAW work after graduation - am interested in international law - and would like to be in Boston or NYC when I graduate

you mean BU has a better program?

i mean NE hovers around a 90 ranking, whereas BU is around 20. furthermore, BU has a very strong study abroad program and offers a concentration in international law. as far as i can tell, NE has nothing comparable.

the co-op program has a lot of international connections - so you aren't right in that regard.

I speak fluent italian and am interested in firms that work out of milan and NYC or boston... etc...

i have a few family members who do this

Just go to law school in Italy. But if you must stay in the U.S. (or your Italian isn't very good), Northeastern isn't going to help you work on international transactions.

i would rather not live in italy for the time being - the political climate is awful

do you have opinions on northeastern as a school - you don't have to go into international law to work for a firm that has international offices

ITT: Another classic example of judging and dismissing a school just based on ranking without actually knowing anything about the school or its placement.

A good friend of mine is a founder of a firm in Boston and when I asked about Boston school's placement, this person told me that it's scary overall, but that BC probably has the most local hires followed by Northeastern and some firms actually prefer Northeastern in general because of the strength of it's coop program. Obviously, there is a lot of self selection towards Boston with both schools and the HLS grads spread out all over the country so a smaller % of them stay in the Greater Boston area. In general though, Northeastern does place well into Boston, especially for non-profit and mid law, it just lacks portability outside of Boston. If someone is dead set on Boston though, it very well might make sense to take the money from Northeastern over a BU or BC at sticker.

sorry - when speaking about international law, I was unclear... I am more interested in firms that have international presence. This could be either public or private.

Thank you kaydish21 - that is great to hear. I know northeastern doesn't give out great money because of a small endowment, but that is ok. There are quite a few firms that are Boston/Italy. Do you know how many grads go to NYC (obviously not for big firm)

I'm not going to lie and say I know the numbers exactly, but I am pretty sure that Northeastern barely places into NYC at all, probably less than 5% of their class, the NYC market is so congested that it's tough to break into from a tier 2 non NYC school. Is it possible? Sure, but if you are very interested in either NYC or Boston, BU is probably the best bet as BC does not place that well into NYC either.

it is good to hear about the job placement in Boston at least - boston has so many international firms - midsize to large

Don't tell me we're going to have a BU/BC fight ITE. Both have strengths and weaknesses, and I've never heard anything conclusive enough to make me say I'd take one over the other. BU's location rocks, though. (Actually, so does Northeastern's. Having the Museum of Fine Arts down the street would be just as bad a distraction as Lincoln Center is for us. )

Just go to a truly national school or the best school you can get into in the region you want to practice (with $$), because chances are high you will not land "international law."

Any firm that has a large international presence will be a big law firm, which means your chances landing a big law gig out of Northeastern are about 5%. This is just for a big law firm. Your chances are even less because any "international law" from big law firms will mainly go to grads from HYS.

Followup question - what is the "international law" you actually want to do?
