Top Law Schools

Hey everybody, my first post here but was wondering if there was a common consensus on which was better? I got offered 20k a year at both schools. I'd ultimately love to get into government but like most want to have the opportunity to get out of that beast of debt (even with scholarship) by doing the corporate law gig at least for a while after graduation. Thanks!

Well, a "corporate law gig" is likely going to be nearly impossible coming from either, but I would personally chose Syracuse, only because I had actually heard of the school and I've never even been to the NE before.

"Corporate law" probably isn't going to happen, unfortunately.

If one is substantially cheaper, go to that one.

If you want to work in state government then Albany. A lot of opportunities for networking and such.

Syracuse will give you a wider range of options geographically and in areas of practice.

However, if you are content with gov't work, you can't really go wrong with Albany - that's their forte if not their only draw. You'll also save about 20k over 3 years going to Albany.

Cuse moved into the top 100 this year. Plus it has much better name recognition because of the sports. The people I know there love it. But, Albany would be more helpful if you wanted to do something in politics, just because of the location.

Prospects will not change dramatically just because a school moves up or down a few spots, especially not for those schools ranked very low that serve small markets.

The people in the region are going to hire from Cuse or not, and the strength of the sports program isn't going to motivate any more lawyers to consider your resume.

I saw that there seemed to be a dramatic difference in starting salaries coming out of Albany vs Syracuse, Albany seems to be somewhere in the low 60's for private practice while cuse claims an average starting salary of 97k for all students employed in private practice (roughly 45% of their class) any truth to these numbers?

never trust employment data from schools. they lie/cheat/deceive. hardcore.

Megyn Kelly, the anchor from Fox News graduated from Syracuse (Undergrad) and Albany (JD) and worked for Jones Day...just sayin...

I don't think either is impossible...less likely sure...but not impossible.

2 main problems

1) Extremely anecdotal example of 1 person
2) Happened many years ago in a different market.

Impossible? Probably not. Incredibly improbable? Yes.

And the ultimate question: possible to the point that's it's a good investment? Probably not, for most.

She also became an anchor at Fox News, and makes a lot more then what she used to make as a lawyer. How many of us can become anchor at Fox News? Not a lot.

So would it be pretty safe to say that that 97K a year figure for proivate practice is a bit of a stretch?
