Harvard (sticker), Berkeley (sticker), Texas (full ride)

So my roomate just recieved a full ride from Texas (where he currently attends undergrad) and loves the school. But has also gotten into Harvard and berkeley.
Any opinions for what he should do? I said Harvard because..... well its Harvard.

I agree harvard is the best choice, people here tend to fall in love with Austin and not want to leave (though that is not me) and Berkeley is on the List because he does not want to live back east, He is looking more toward Cali or Texas as where he wants to practice, and he didnt get into Stanford which was his number 1.

Then Harvard. If he wants options in both states he needs to be at a T6. Assure him that he will not be pigeonholed on the east coast in any way, shape, or form with a Harvard JD.

I completly agree with everyone here, except that to get options in both states he needs a T6, are we forgetting that Berkeley is ranked 7? Again i vote harvard just as the majority are, i think hes leaning Berkeley. Hopefully i can show him this and get him thinking a little more clearly

if he is interested in IP law, then Berkeley is a viable option, otherwise Harvard is the answer.

If he wants to practice in Texas or Cali... I see no reason to go to Harvard and assume all that debt. I lived in MA for a bit.... it's very expensive in Cambridge. Texas is a T15 school and will easily land you as good a paying job in Cali and for sure in TX. Austin has a better cost of living, arguably a better quality of life...you'll be going to school debt free.... I don't understand the debate here. If he wanted to practice on the East Coast, I can see Harvard entering the picture. But if not... he wants to assume $200k+ in debt just to say you went to "Harvard"?
When you are looking at starting salaries and then salary to debt ratio, it's going to favor Texas IMO. Is there a specific type of law he wants to practice where Harvard has a significant advantage over Texas?

I still say texas. Having worked with law firms in LA, Texas places VERY well there. Actually the partners in the law firm I last worked at were UCLA and Texas grads. I almost applied to Texas but I didn't want to bring my family that far away from my parents.

I've seen people turn down Harvard for far sillier reasons. If he wants to live in Texas.. taking a full ride from TX isn't a bad idea.

Look, if the man wants a different school, the opinions of a bunch of random Internet posters are totally immaterial. And if he's mature enough to go to law school, he
shouldn't be swayed by reading a thread full of people saying, "Harvard, because, you know, it's
Harvard."
If he's aware of the placement from the schools he's looking at and he can get what he wants from another school, there's nothing wrong with that.

Odds of landing biglaw out of Berkeley ITE is supposedly top 1/3, according to a lot of people. It's probably not much better, if not worse, for Texas. Odds of landing biglaw out of Harvard, much, much better (80%?), at least that's what people are saying.
Anecdotally, HYS really pulled away from the pack ITE.

Anecdotally, Columbia was at 60% or something like that. HYS is still much better than CCN.
Of course this is all based off anecdotes, since no school has officially released any information. (I wouldn't count anonymous leakage on TLS official, but anecdotal.) But I would go to Harvard, duh.

Are you in love with Austin or Berkeley, or is there a particular professor at either school you absolutely must study with? Odds are, there are two at Harvard who will blow you away in ways you haven't thought of. Go to Harvard. Congratulations!

You just troll too much for CCN. I said HYS pulled away from the pack ite and you turned this into a discussion about CCN. If those are legit numbers, then HYS is probably doing a lot better than that.

Harvard reimbursed 0-offered Harvard grads last year. They literally gave back three years worth of tuition. I think this pretty much offsets that full-ride to Texas in a way. But only "in a way," since you'd still have to deal with the Harvard loans if you end up getting a kickass job at Wachtell.
