Living in Chicago and commuting to South Bend would be awful. It will take you FAR longer than 1:20 to get there when you factor in traffic. Have you ever driven in Chicago rush hour? My advice to you: don't do it.

Dude, this would be such a terrible idea, in my opinion. Traffic at the Illinois-Indiana border can be a real pain and sometimes even getting out of the city takes 30 minutes. Besides, driving in the winter would be awful. It would probably just be best to stay in or near South Bend and come to Chicago for weekend visits and things.

I do know people who did this. He taught at ND, she worked in Chicago. But they both had relatively lax schedules, nothing like being in law school. He used to get books on tape for the drive. It sounded kind of miserable, and certainly wasn't by choice. But it is, technically, possible.

unless you want to do a part time mba, then you can do THAT in chicago

I would never try this, and certainly not my 1L year. Even if everything went perfectly according to plan (a fantasy), you'd spend 3 hours in the car. How could you even pay for the gas/maintenance let alone the 15 hours a week you squander? The reality is that you will face road closings, construction, and other Chicago fun-factors that will stretch your tidy 1:30 travel time to an unbearable extreme.

south bend apartments are not that bad especially when you consider how cheap they are compared to Chicago. This sounds like a terrible idea

This is like voluntarily reducing your workday by several hours. Plus travel costs and much higher rent.
