Dude, this would be such a terrible idea, in my opinion. Traffic at the Illinois-Indiana border can be a real pain and sometimes even getting out of the city takes 30 minutes. Besides, driving in the winter would be awful. It would probably just be best to stay in or near South Bend and come to Chicago for weekend visits and things.sca218ml wrote:Has anyone done it? Google maps says it's a 1:44 drive from the south loop (Approx state and 18th), but I drove it from further away in Chicago and it only took me 1:30. Figure it would take 1:20 regularly (conservative estimate). Is this crazy? How about having a crappy studio in South Bend (rent is cheap) as well to stay over if I needed to during the week and during finals?
I do know people who did this. He taught at ND, she worked in Chicago. But they both had relatively lax schedules, nothing like being in law school. He used to get books on tape for the drive. It sounded kind of miserable, and certainly wasn't by choice. But it is, technically, possible.sca218ml wrote:Thanks guys, these are good points-kinda had to hear 'em. I am familiar with Chi traffic and the upside is I would be coming and going at times that there isn't much. Hadn't really considered the weather issue in the winter though so thanks for bringing that up. I do agree that a daily commute is impossible but I'm still wondering if anyone has (or know of anyone that has) sort of lived half and half. South Bend during the week, Chi Fri-Sun or Fri-Mon.
