Out of top 100, significantly lessen degree's worth?

Post by sequence » Tue Apr 13, 2010 7:25 pm

I was leaning towards Maine because I could definitely enjoy living in Portland, and it has a fairly good reputation there. It was #100 last year, and now it's totally dropped out. I realize it's not a very big fall to lose such a low spot to begin with, but can I expect this to lessen what my degree is worth? IE: Will firms start the salaries lower there now -because- the school is currently out of the top 100?

Thanks for any responses.

I don't know about Maine but I wouldn't put too much stake into a drop from T2 (low end) to top of T3 as having a significant impact on the worth of the degree. The rankings change every year and in 20 years no one is going to remember where Maine was ranked in 2011. The reputation of an institution over time is what matters. If the school is a regional powerhouse and then a school that is second fiddle to it suddenly passes it rank for a year, the move will not impact the employment decisions.

I don't think employers look at the rankings...at least not on an annual basis. TLSers are just weird.

Employers in Maine probably won't even notice the change.

Employers outside Maine might look up the rank, but they probably won't care.

If there's good reputation and alumni network, I say the rankings wouldn't matter so much.

If you think you'd like to go to Maine, forget about the rankings.

It's the only/best law school (that I know of) in Maine. The rankings can suck it.
