To be fair, the author of that was speculating as to how one reviewer might do ONE assessment. Aggregated across many,many deans/profs, the arbitrariness of the reputational ranking diminishes.

Also, would you be saying this if nyu had a 4.6 vs. A 4.5

(The only legit critique of the reputational score is the echo effect imho)

I would be saying the same thing, regardless of the effect on my school. I was mostly posting this for the sake of information. And yes, it was unfair to aim this post at one person, but that's how I roll.

You're right, it becomes less arbitrary over a large data set, but I think compression is a much bigger problem than arbitrariness. If the schools were ranked on a scale of 100, you'd see a geometrically increasing differences that would make the rankings much more meaningful.

Oh, and I disagree about the echo effect; I actually think that's the most useful aspect of the rankings. Law is a prestige-driven field. You know why Yale is the best? Because they're the best, and no other reason.
