I was actually surprised how expensive housing is for Ithaca. (Ha, looking at housing for a school that hasn't let me in is so sad.Helmholtz wrote:If you factor in COL, it's still about the same price as Cardozo plus or minus a thousand dollars a year or so.
Housing is NOT expensive in Ithaca. My sis pays like $400/month (if that). I dunno where you're getting that idea from.jks289 wrote:I was actually surprised how expensive housing is for Ithaca. Not NYC expensive, but comparable to mid-size cities and especially to other college towns, it seems kind of outrageous.
It depends for where and for what you're looking. If you want to be in collegetown, an eh studio will run you around $700/month. I'm an undergad now and know plenty of people paying over $1k a month at places like 312 and Eddy Gate. If you get outside of collegetown though, prices can drop of dramatically, from what I here. The convenience is really worth the $$, IMO, though, especially in the winter.keg411 wrote:Housing is NOT expensive in Ithaca. My sis pays like $400/month (if that). From what we have looked at a comparable place will cost you $600-$700 in St Louis versus $1000-1300 in Collegetown. That is pratically what you pay in Boston. I'm sure if you get further away from Collegetown you pay less. But it also seems like places aren't as nice, and you get less for the money. That is just based on internet searching.keg411 wrote:Housing is NOT expensive in Ithaca. My sis pays like $400/month (if that). Everywhere my sis has lived has been walkable to the law school. Even in the winter. (She has always had roommates though; if you want a studio or your own apartment I suppose it's more... but it's probably not worth it)Thomas Jefferson wrote:It depends for where and for what you're looking. I mean, any city can be dirt cheap if you have enough roommates . . .keg411 wrote:Everywhere my sis has lived has been walkable to the law school. Even in the winter. Your sister also likely has a roommate. I realize a lot of kids do that, but the cost of renting a bedroom somewhere is not indicative of housing costs if what you need is an actual apartment. The availability of a studio/1 br can be quite different from that of random bedrooms for rent in houses/larger apartments filled with kids. As it turns out, reasonably priced studios and 1 bedrooms near campus are not too easy to come by in Ithaca. They do exist, however.keg411 wrote:Housing is NOT expensive in Ithaca. You should be aware, if you intend to drive, that parking in Ithaca and at Cornell is absolutely horrendous--both expensive and a pain in the ass.dakatz wrote:I looked on craigslist and there seemed to be quite a few very reasonably priced apartments that were a short drive away. Sure, everything in Collegetown, right by the campus is a lot. But I wouldn't mind a 5 or 10 minute drive if it can save me hundreds every month.
Hmm, then I guess I will look for housing close to wherever the bus lines run.Thomas Jefferson wrote:You should be aware, if you intend to drive, that parking in Ithaca and at Cornell is absolutely horrendous--both expensive and a pain in the ass.dakatz wrote:I looked on craigslist and there seemed to be quite a few very reasonably priced apartments that were a short drive away. Um, ok. Not sure how relevant that is. Does she actually rent a 1br for $400/mo? .keg411 wrote: She's a 3L
That's not too difficult. And as a 1L, you won't need to pay for the bus.dakatz wrote:Hmm, then I guess I will look for housing close to wherever the bus lines run.Thomas Jefferson wrote:You should be aware, if you intend to drive, that parking in Ithaca and at Cornell is absolutely horrendous--both expensive and a pain in the ass.dakatz wrote:I looked on craigslist and there seemed to be quite a few very reasonably priced apartments that were a short drive away. No, but the way you said "plenty of kids" in a lovely condescending tone I thought that you thought she was an undergrad. If you save $$$$ by having roommates, what's the big deal? I'd rather pay $350/month with roommates than $1k-ish without. It seems like a waste of money.kn6542 wrote:Um, ok. Not sure how relevant that is.
