Cornell w/ $45k or Vanderbilt w/ $60k

So I just got my Cornell offer today, and this looks like the choice it will come down to for me.

I've visited Cornell and loved it. Great campus, great people... the town might get boring over the course of 3 years though. I haven't visited Vanderbilt yet, but I will soon.

My career goals: I'd like to be in DC doing government/PI work, but if I end up freaking out over debt and choosing to go into private practice, I don't really care where I end up. So I'm pretty open on that front.

What do you think?

I think it comes down to which school you like the best after you visit both. Cornell is obviously better for NYC while Vanderbilt is going to be better for the south. I don't think you can go wrong with either of them. Personally I'd pick Vanderbilt because the weather in Ithaca would kill me.

Wow, these results are surprising.

Is everyone basing their vote on the weather? lol

There is a lot of Cornell hate on TLS because they have lower medians than schools ranked below them which of course automatically makes Cornell TTT. Vanderbilt also placed a higher percentage of their class into NLJ250 firms last year, though that's probably because Cornell's NYC-oriented class got hit harder than Vanderbilt's.

vanderbilt, based on weather and city.

Ah, I see.

I saw the NLJ data, and you're probably right about the hit being due to the NYC focus. In prior years, Cornell was placing about 20% higher than Vanderbilt, on par with several higher ranked schools. I think Cornell's placement being lower than Vanderbilt's will prove to be an aberration (much like Columbia's placement being lower than Northwestern's).

How'd you get notification? My mail goes to my parent's address- just wondering if I should give Mom a call!

I think they're pretty close in terms of career opportunities, though Cornell seems to have placed more in biglaw historically. However, the NYC market was hit hard ITE and Cornell's placement has suffered because of it. Vandy seems to be getting stronger in terms of placement.

Really, I think it comes down to where you'd rather spend 3 years, because if you want to end up in DC, I think they both will have pretty comparable placement there.

FWIW, I chose Vandy simply because Nashville is cool, the weather will be better, and the bigger scholly + lower tuition.

Helping others because I'm looking for help and trying to build good karma ...

I voted Vanderbilt - weather, city, placement last year, plus I think of Cornell as being rather regional not in a bad way but in focused on NYC only.

Either are going to be great options.

No real wrong choice. Biglaw placement comparable. I hate the cold, love the South, and love free money, so I voted Vandy.
