Tell me why Philly is awesome

Still hoping for Upenn maybe, but I gotta sell the city to a certain someone. Neither of us has ever spent any meaningful time in the city so I'm basing my opinion off of Eagles fans and she's basing her's off of the first half of the Fresh Prince theme song.

Your insights are much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

It's more affordable than many other major cities. Really good shopping. Great cultural scene - lots of good restaurants, music venues, museums, etc. And it's only 2 hours by train to NYC and DC.

University City (where Penn is located) is a really nice bubble. You get a nice view of Center City (literally you can see the buildings), it is close enough to take the "L"/subway into Center City when you want to drink, and as Penn slowly takes over West Philly it gets safer.

Other facts:
- Penn has an awesome gym (Pottruck Center)
- Food trucks are really good by the school (try Kim's, Le Anh's, Bento Box)
- It's cheaper than NYC
- Penn students are just a lot more down to earth than other first-rate-school student bodies

Avenue of the Arts + Fairmount Park area. It's a mini-NYC that's more affordable.

If you go to the museum, you can watch dozens of people do the "rocky pose" at the top of the steps every minute.....

Apparently you now have 30% greater chance of not being gunned-down in Philadelphia:

---------
The city's homicide rate has fallen 30 percent from the grim total it had registered by this point in 2007, when the constant deluge of murders led to the loathsome local nickname "Killadelphia."

According to police statistics, 162 homicides have been recorded so far this year, compared with 183 a year ago, and 234 in 2007.

The city had 333 homicides all of last year, a 15 percent drop from the 392 slayings in '07.

The homicide rate - which soared at a time earlier this decade when homicides in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles were reaching record lows - is now among other signs of progress in the city's crime-fighting efforts.

The number of shootings has dropped 30 percent, to 781 thus far, police said.

Five hundred rapes have been reported so far for the year, a 13 percent drop from a year ago, while the number of gunpoint robberies and aggravated assaults involving guns have dropped 3 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Overall, violent crime in the city has decreased by 5 percent.

Sounds like Boston...or NYC...

Actually, pick any city in the northeast and someone will say that...

Philly is NYC's dirtier, more violent little brother.

They do have Morimoto's though. If you go visit you should definitely eat at Morimoto's.

Not only that...in the morning, the steak trucks make these breakfast sandwiches with like eggs, and cheese and ketchup.

I would gain 20 lbs in 1L.

It's not Ithaca.

Also: Jim's Steaks, Tony Luke's, Pat's King of Steaks... They're pretty much all good (except Geno's which is xenophobic).

-There's lots of amazing cheap food (the aforementioned food trucks, lots of awesome restaurants around the campus, and let's not forget Rita's)
-The shopping ranges from high end to dirt cheap
-It's completely walkable, from University City to Old City and back again
-It has lots of fun neighborhoods: a Chinatown that beats DC's and Boston's, South Street, Old City, etc.
-Frankly, NYC is fucking filthy, too. There may not be as much visible trash on the ground, but when you get inside and wash your hands, just as much grime comes off (probably more, actually).

Philadelphia is just really comfy. Lots of people trash it because that's the cool thing to do, but there are people who love it, too.

Wow, you need to relax.

It says "Please" and it's a private establishment. If they want people to order in English, where's the harm?

There's nothing wrong with wanting people to order in English. But let's be honest - that sign, just like all the bumper stickers and T-shirts to the same effect, isn't coming from a good place.

someone should take action to suppress that private business owner from expressing his opinion and being able to set his own conditions for service in his restaurant.

WHY would this sort of behavior be tolerated!

Are people seriously arguing that the sign that was posted earlier is just some business owner letting his customers know that he does not understand languages other than English?

I am not from Philly and have only visited a handful of times. Is there some subtext to this sign/restaurant that only a Philly resident would understand? Cultural tension, or a history of the restaurant discriminating?

It looks like a patriotic sign meant to inform customers to order in English.
