Probably a stupid question.... But I learned through this website thatvit would be ideal to matriculate at top 14... Why is it 14, not 15 or 20?... Luckily I will attend Cornell ... Also since Cornell is 13, could it slip to 15 in the forseable future?

It is actually T13 now.

I've always been a fan of T12.

Hi guys! I just got into Chicago! I'm so excited to attend a school ranked 4th out of the whole T14!

It's because those 14 schools have always been in the top 14. If one of them were to drop a rank (Georgetown), then it would be the T13 and Cornell would look nervous.
Every other school has, at some point, been ranked below 14 (in fact, they always were).

The biglaw firms that take a much higher percentage of grads from the T13 than the rest of the TTT20 schools

It's also not untrue. Gtown is a step down from MBVPDNC and is close to Vandy, USC, UCLA, UT.
If Cornell employment numbers keep dropping as fast as their students are dropping off gorges it will be T12 soon.

The gap between the lowest T14 (GULC) and the highest non-T14 (BC) on that list is roughly a factor of 2. That is by far the largest relative gap between any adjacent schools on that list.

Any kind of "t#" is rather meaningless and only used by elitist queers. The only numbers that matter are the ones that are directly applicable to your aspirations (ie clerkship, biglaw employment). The t14 thing developed because of the large gap in those numbers between the t14 and everyone else and the t13 thing is primarily used by those who really wanted HYS and didn't get it so they have to put down whatever school is right below the school that accepted them to feel more important.

I'm sure that if you bought a couple drinks for one of the many, many GT 2Ls who struck out at OCI this year, they'd probably get on board with the whole T13 idea.

+1. I find the "t13" moniker to be very annoying. I'm not going to Georgetown and never wanted to, but its part of the T14, regardless of how people on this board disparage it. The t14 schools are known as such because those are the only 14 schools to ever be in the top 10, and the only 14 schools that have ever made the top 14. Georgetown is one of them - end of story.

Good question.
Torvon is wrong, even though what he says is theoretically true.
The T14 refers to a group of law schools that, since the inception of the USNWR rankings, have been perennially ranked in the top-14. As well, they all happen to be conveniently attached to very prestigious colleges/universities.
But there now exists a proverbial "T18" that would include UCLA, USC, Texas and Vanderbilt, because, for most or all of the recent decade, those schools have not placed outside of the top-18. Moreover, a lot of people suggest that UCLA and Vanderbilt, and to a lesser degree, Vanderbilt, could/should replace T14 schools like GULC, Cornell and Duke.

I find the whole T13 thing ridiculous as well, but your definition of T14 is a very common misconception. 2005 was the first year that Northwestern ever made it into top 10, and the term T14 definitely existed before 2005.
T14 comes from the fact that these 14 schools were always in the top 14 since the inception of the USNews rankings, with the notable exception of the inaugural year.
