I am trying to figure out if ranking within the top half would be manageable or if it would be too much of a risk when money is on the line

To answer this question you need to know what the median GPA of the class in question is. If the median is 3.0 then it is the indentical requirement. Median above 3.0 and keeping that GPA is harder than just being in the top half, median below and it is easier. I have heard 3.3 is a common median, but I think that varies by school.

if you are looking at a lower ranked school, 3.0 is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of top third. for a higher ranked school the curve shouldn't be so harsh.

if you look up the schools in the nalp directory it should say what their medians are.

I've noticed this. Why do the curves vary based on the rank of the school? Isn't it more favorable for a lower ranked school to set a higher curve so its students look better?
