Which Penn State Campus?

Post by maclaw2010 » Wed Feb 10, 2010 4:47 pm

I am wondering which campus is preferred? Or better for that matter?

From the LSAC school instructions:

"The law school maintains two completely unified, interconnected campuses; one in University Park, PA, the location of Penn State's flagship campus, the other in Carlisle, PA, the law school's home of 175 years."

I haven't visited either campus and so am applying in the dark. Any help would be appreciated.

I've heard the Philly campus is quite nice.

Carlisle is about 125 miles outside philly, it's not really a "philly campus". More like "Harrisburg Campus".

Correct, and it is very modern and large. University Park campus is attached to the undergrad campus, Carlisle is a couple of hours away. It really depends on what you're looking for in a place to live. I think all of the courses are offered at both locations, sometimes by video teleconference from the other campus. You can also switch after your first year, maybe first semester but don't quote me.

Both campuses are brand new. Carlisle has fewer students and more of a legal community in the surrounding area if you're interested in externships (Harrisburg is only 20 minutes away).

University Park has more students, more student organizations (I think), might be a bit more exciting for folks looking to get out on the town with friends, football in the fall, and other things you would associate with being on the main campus of a big university.

Is one campus easier to get into than the other?

Well, that depends on where you start and what kind of resources you have.

For example, if you're in Philadelphia and you own a bicycle, it'll be easier to get to Carlisle. If you're in Altoona and you're planning on walking, you should probably go to UP.

Carlisle if by boat, UP if by plane.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant which school is easier to get accepted to, not which is easier to access. It asks you which campus you are applying to; if you have borderline numbers and don't care one way or the other which campus would give you the best chance of admission?

neither school is easier to get into, and both buildings are new.

No, there's definitely a Philly campus. I'm pretty sure it has it's own application process but I'm positive its tied to the Penn State system. they have a slightly different curriculum too, with a cross disciplinary focus and such. Other than that, I've heard good things about the campus, resources and overall quality of life, though to be fair, every once in awhile, a couple of guys who are up to no good started makin trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight and my mom got scared and said you're movin with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air. I whistled for the cab and when it came near, the lisence plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I could see that this cab was rare but I thought nah forget it, yo homes to Bel Air! But seriously, Philly campus is sweet.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
