Columbia/NYU - Dismal Chicago placement?

Columbia and NYU both place around 1 to 2% of their graduates in the midwest each year. Is this self-selection, crappy placement ability, or both?
For comparison, Stanford places 8% in the midwest, Harvard 7% (if I'm understanding their page correctly), and UChicago ~35%.

I think that a lot of this has to do w/ self-selection though ... firms will still want to diversify their starting classes so it's not as though students are Columbia or NYU who are similarly ranked to those at Chicago, Michigan, and NU are being turned down.

i'm guessing a lot less people go to stanford thinking they will stay in palo alto forever or go to harvard thinking they will stay in boston (there's not enough prestige in that town to go around for those assholes) than those that go to CLS/NYU figuring they will stay in nyc...

Those who are aiming for the Midwest will certainly take HYS if they get in, but the same isn't true of CCN. They're most likely to choose Chicago over Columbia/NYU, especially since NYU tends to be slightly less selective than the other 2. If you look at the rest of the T14 (minus NU), they place a tiny percentage (usually <10%) in the Midwest as well.
