Berkeley Haters

Is there a reason behind all the anti-berkeley statements out there, especially here on TLS and even my own pre-law advisor. I just cannot see the justification. I ask, because save Yale, Berkeley is by far my top choice

huh, im not sure. i think the main reason is cuz ppl dont think it deserves its currently high ranking
whether thats true or not is another issue. kind of reminds me of NYU when compared to CC of CCN in that ppl on TLS, whether correctly or incorrectly, believe it to be weaker than rankings suggest

As with many things, this is largely a matter of opinion. If Berkeley is among your top choices, then just go for it.

I was always very pro-Berkeley, but then they raised tuition inordinately. Now I've joined the Berkeley haters.

although it being a public school is probably a reason for negative comments, that argument is completely off-base, and I have to assume is only made by people who are unfamiliar with the UC system or CA schools in general.
Berkeley is my top choice at the moment, and it is certainly the 2nd best school in CA. Although the recent tuition hikes suck horribly, it's still significantly cheaper than most other top schools.
I probably shouldn't comment since I'm not a hater...I just ask that haters inform themselves first.

Not true. Berkeley will no longer be significantly cheaper than most other top schools. Berkeley Law for
California residents will be $44,220 in 2010-11 and $49,347 in 2011-12. For non-residents, $52,220 in 2010-11.
By comparison, Stanford Law in 2009-10 is $42,420 and Harvard Law is $43,900. Those will undoubtedly rise, but probably not to the extent of Berkeley's increase.

Having spent 4 years in Berkeley, I can tell you that this is an advantage. The kind of people who make unfunny cracks about "hippies" and self-select away from Berkeley. This is a big plus.

This is exactly why I would've wanted to go there.

does this statement have any basis in fact?
because everything i've read and heard about the matter (which is not a small amount) suggests otherwise.

Ridiculous GPA requirement and ridiculous tuition.

+1,000,000,000
I'd wager that alot of people who talk about berkeley and hippies haven't even been. It's a huge school.
Hopefully all of the "I can't stand hippies, hipsters, button down shirts, etc. etc." type of people on this site all go somewhere far away from me next year. Stay on the east coast or something. You all have lists of things that make you rant and rave, do you want to know the one thing that sets me into a rant?? Intolerant morons.
Unwashed hippies my pasty white ass....

Berkeley's tuition in 2009-10 is $36,485. It goes to $44,220 in 2010-11. That's an increase of 21% as Berkeley/UC has embarked on the most aggressive tuition hike campaign in the country.
For the other schools to hike tuition by the same 21% would mean Stanford would charge $51,300 and Harvard would charge $53,100 in 2010-11. Could it happen? Sure. Is it likely? Probably not. The factors that have led UC down this path have not affected Stanford, Harvard or any of the other T14 schools in the same way.

I don't know what emilybeth has been reading, but there is absolutely no way other top schools are going to raise tuition so drastically next year. We are in a recession, for God's sake. The tuition hike and the rank inflation are tcr's.

Well, when there's multiple UVAers up and on TLS at 4am, what do you expect?
