I was just waitlisted via status checker at Fordham PT with a 169/3.42, no convictions, non-retarded personal statements. Hmm. Anyone know why this might've happened?

I was accepted with numbers above that...so I wouldn't assume YP. Fordham is known for caring whether or not you express interest in the school. If I were you, I would call them immediately and let them know you want to stay on the waitlist. Send a LOCI. Is there any chance you are in the NYC area but didn't visit? I know several people that have landed on the waitlist inexplicably- most seem to have this in common. If you actually want to go, let them know that.

I am a NYC resident all my life, and I suppose I figured visiting would be done during the school's advertised visiting weekends. As for the explicit interest in Fordham...they didn't require nor ask for a "Why Fordham" - it seems odd that there would be some kind of a "secret requirement" that I sent an unsolicited statement to truly show my love.

I didn't mean to imply you need to send a statement. I didn't do that myself. But visiting would definitely help you express interest. They will even let you meet with a member of the admissions staff. Formulate a few well-thought-out questions and go on a tour. It won't take that long and it's worth it if you want to go to Fordham. That said, you do have strong credentials so you'll probably have other options.

This. Fordham is not known for YPing at all... I personally know a 180 who was accepted, and half of CLS '12 applied and got in as well. Fordham is waitlisting like crazy this cycle. It could have been a number of things, but if OP wants to go, a well placed LOCI should result in admission.

FTR, a 169/3.4x is probably not going to get YP'd at any school in the 20-30 range. If this has happened to the OP at any other T30s, he/she needs to reread apps just to make sure nothing inadvertent was said. It's happened.

EDIT: DB said you don't need a Why X statement, but they probably help anyway. The school got a bunch of them from me... too bad they were LOCIs. I do think you should check your app and check with your recommenders to make sure nothing is wrong.

How exactly does a yield protect work and why do schools utilize it?

Methinks the applicant pool is larger than we know across the board.

I haven't heard from anyone else yet. I just decided to check my status checkers, and there is was. "Your file has been waitlisted".

This is the kind of crap that makes me nervous.

No way you should've been WL. You GPA is a few points below median, but it's not that bad, and that LSAT should've made you a lock.

Schools waitlist people whom they think will not attend, so their yield percentage, which gets reported to USNews, will not take a hit.

Fordham is not known for abusing YP. Applications really are up by quite a lot. However, OP's numbers should have been golden, and he/she should investigate to make sure nothing is wrong.

applying with a 3.38 and a 170... this makes me freak out.

my friend asked somebody to write him a lor and she agreed happily. she gave it to him in a sealed envelope and he put it up to the light and noticed some negative words so he opened it and saw that she wrote bad stuff about him, so he threw it out. then she would periodically ask him if he heard anything back yet.

Oh for God's sake. You just made up that story. My LOR's came from two college professors that I trust 100%.

That is scary.

yeah thats what I thought. You could just as easily say no. Thats freakin weird.

ryguy-chill out. I didnt make up the story and I was just giving you a possibility. if you trust them, then great. there is, of course, the other possibility that theyre not all about numbers and just werent ready to accept you at this point, despite the lsat.

Meh, if someone asked me for a recommendation, I would write an honest one. If they don't have the wherewithall to realize that they were bad employees/bad students in my class/at the job, not really my fault. Now, if I had absolutely nothing good to say, that would be a little different. It is frequent for LoRs to have both positive and negative information in them, though, because people normally aren't perfect.

That said, following up like that is kind of cold.
