I feel pretty secure at NYU with 172/3.6.

Last year, 172s between 3.3 and 3.7 went 15 for 15 at NYU. 171s in the same range were 8 for 11.

Were these EDs?

Looking at the LSN page suggests the answer is no. In fact, a significant number of the 172/3.5-3.7 applicants withdrew to attend elsewhere. Looks like Columbia or Michigan with money were the most popular.

Edit: Just saw your edit. NYU is easier to get into than Chicago, I still think 171 will be up in the air. But I think 172 / 3.6 is for the most part safe.

Edit #2: While this site neglects quite a few top law schools, NYU is included. I think it is pretty good, considering it has the most data and isn't self-selecting like LSN.

Sounds about right. Oh boy, if I get waitlisted at NYU--barring a semi-unexpected acceptance from Columbia--I am going to be all over them to make sure I'm right near the top of that list. I'd pretty much do anything to stay in the t5 after coming so close.

I find it very hard to take the LSAC calculator seriously. My odds are no better than mid-50s% for anything in the t14 over there. It really goes against every indication I've received in here and from other data. Around 30% for Penn according to them. 45% ish for Michigan. No better than a coin flip at UCLA? Please.

It's made from real data. Like, that is a legitimate, complete data set. Like, that is actually what happened in the 2008-09 cycle. The reason Michigan and Penn are low is because of YP and "Why X?" essays.

I should really start reevaluating my goals and expectations if I'm a coin flip at the #15 school with a 172.

I would really love to know what kind of URMs everyone was. That and details about the type of recs they got (professor, employer, etc.)

UCLA probably also practices YP in the 170+ range. However, they also are a UC school, which means they love GPA.

Other things to consider might be UVA's pro-state applicants stance (rejecting out of state with better #s), and potential Texas/UCLA YPing in addition to Penn and Mich.

For the sake of preserving my sanity, I am probably going to disregard your estimation of my chances and go with that of the few dozen other posters who have commented until my decisions come. Please don't take it personally...

I'm surprised I haven't seen this thread yet. No shot at Chicago, look elsewhere.

I am guessing ED will definitely put you over the edge at NYU chances are great. I was just saying for the OP, 3.6 is the 25th at NYU and Chicago and 171 is the median. So I wouldn't feel comfortable being at one median and well below another.

From LSN, Chicago 6/9 and NYU 8/11 look like pretty good chances to me. You'd be surprised how low of a GPA some schools will take, in order to get the median LSAT. For example, UVa applicants with a 3.5x/170 went 13 for 13 last year on LSN.

Blazers, don't worry about it. If not NYU, then Penn or Chicago. No worries.

170 is near UVA 75th, so that makes sense.

I wouldn't do this, personally. I know it sucks not to hit your practice score, but most people don't, and I think this will just come across as whining unless there was some good reason you choked.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I just thought that an addendum would generally be needed for an 8-point increase... not the case?

I hope so, I would be absolutely thrilled to go there. I think I'd personally prefer Chicago to any school outside HYS and I already know those three aren't happening.

The only reason I think I'm going to is that I'd like to stay in Chicago. I also think I might be able to play on my link to that school. (ahem... avatar  )

Cool, that's definitely what I'm going to do. I think that between my background (Chi is home) and academic interest (I'm an econ major so law/economics is a big point of attraction about U of C) I could probably write a pretty convincing letter. Also, my UG is strongly represented at UChicago law and people seem to think they like prestigious UGs...

I think I would take Michigan with $$ over anything but Chicago. From some of the LSN stuff I've seen, though, I don't think I'm going to get much if at all.

...and 171 is their 75th.

Edit: I guess I should clarify. In other words, with such a small difference from median-75th, that means that a significant portion of the 50-75 quadrant is filled with 170s. So while not mathematically "above the median," it can be perceived that way.

Yea, I have your exact same numbers, literally.

I think were in at Cornell, 50/50 or 60/40 at Penn and out at Columbia. Idk about $ at Michigan.

I'm realizing I really want Berkeley... Any tips? FWIW I have a significant upward trend (and degree gpa is more than .1 higher than LSDAS) and my parents were immigrants (diversity? i'm not hispanic or black, though)...

i'm rethinking Uchicago ED...

Also maybe going to get targeted recs for Berk and SLS

I think Berkeley is about the last place that would accept you with a 3.6 after HYS, but if Berkeley is your first choice I definitely wouldn't ED Chicago. Write a GPA addendum, write a 4 page PS, and make sure your LORs are good, apply now (or soon) and you might have a shot. Berkeley says to apply in October, mid-November at the latest.
