Ohio University and Law School

Postby waffle09 » Sun Jan 04, 2009 3:29 pm

If I attend Ohio University and get a good GPA and a good LSAT score then will I still have a chance of getting into a top Law School such as Berkeley Boalt or Stanford? It's not that I cannot get into a better school than Ohio University but I just recently really started think about Law as a strong possibility for my future. Any Advice would be appreciated.

The school you attend for undergrad is close to irrelevant for admission to law school. You'll need an impressive GPA and LSAT for those schools, as well as convincing personal crap, but your undergrad school will not hinder you.

1. Don't party too much...difficult at OU, but you can do it. Eyes on the prize.
2. I would major in Poli Sci. It's easy to ace all your classes and you'll get plenty of writing practice. Philosophy is probably a better prep for law school, but your grades will probably not be as high. Major in Poli Sci...Study logic and rhetoric on the side.
3. Get to know your profs and prelaw advisor from day one. This will enable you to get QUALITY letters of recomendation.
4. Prep for the LSAT and take it EARLY. You'll need a top score for the schools you're hoping for.

Don't worry about the quality of your undergrad too much. As previous poster states, it matters little for law school admission. Besides, OU is hardly community college. It is a very solid school. College like almost everything in life gives you what you put into it.

Good all around advice for sure. I am planning on Poli Sci for exactly the reasons you have put forward. How early is early enough for the LSAT? Senior year in October? June before Senior year?

I would shoot for June before senior year. You won't have classes hanging over your head, and if you f*** it up you can retake in Oct. This will also allow you to easily meet an Early Decision deadline to increase your chances at your #1 pick.

If you're looking at OU and are a very strong applicant, look at the Honors-Tutorial college. http://www.honors.ohio.edu/
I know a few people who were in this. They all loved it and went on to top grad schools. You will get to know your professors very well because a lot of your classes are in very small groups.

Another note is that if you are looking at doing Poli Sci for sure, OSU has a much stronger department, but obviously there are other factors in choosing a college.

It also sounds like you are still in HS, just based off of you not having a GPA. OU is great with their scholarship money.

GPA ACT SAT
3.0 36 1580 - 1600 Full In-State Tuition
3.0 35 1530 - 1570 Full In-State Tuition
3.0 34 1500 - 1520 Full In-State Tuition
3.0 33 1450 - 1490 Full In-State Tuition
3.0 32 1400 - 1440 Full In-State Tuition
3.0 31 1360 - 1390 $4,000
3.0 30 1320 - 1350 $2,000
3.0 29 1280 - 1310 $1,500
3.0 28 1240 - 1270 $1,000
3.0 27 1200 - 1230 $ 750
3.0 26 1170 - 1190 $ 500
3.0 25 1130 - 1160 $ 500

amounts are annual.

Like everyone said....the school you attend doesn't matter.
But if you want Berkley or Stanford you want a rocking GPA!

Good luck!!!

Ya I am in High School and I have seen this list before :) I am currently at a 30 with one more time to take the test and get that 32.

and to the guy talking about OSU, I actually have done Post Secondary there and I simply cannot stand it there. I do not like my adviser, my teachers, the campus size and I do not think I could stand another four years there. Sadly I cannot do the Honors college I do not think because I already applied with a regular application while I still wanted to do Music Therapy and there is no Honors Tutorial for that. I can however apply for my sophomore year, or maybe I could call and see if it is too late because the deadline is not until Feb. 1... I'll have to check that out.

Sorry, but I can't see an Ohio University thread and not jump in--

F*ck Ohio [University]

We (Buffalo) kicked your ass in football last year, this year, and will continue to do so for years to come.
-------
Now that I have that out of the way, everyone on here is correct. Major in something easy that will help to improve your writings skills, study early for the LSAT, have good LORs, and write an INTERESTING personal statement.

Your anger should be directed at Georgetown.
