3.47/170 non-urm with I think decent softs?

Postby deanw1993 » Wed Sep 28, 2016 7:58 pm

Went to a top 30 USA news ranked undergraduate, 3.47 gpa with a BA in Political Science.

Softs:
Interned with two top 15 Biglaw firms while in undergraduate
Currently working as a corporate secretary for a top 10 Biglaw firm.
(Don't know if this counts) but having my 2 LOR written by associates at the top 10 Biglaw firm.

Would love to go to a T14 and nerves really make me really want to apply to UVA law expedited early admission, just so I can find out sooner.

And nope, not lucky enough to be able to afford sticker price.

What do you guys think?

grades??

I had 3.4x and 172-176. Got into most of the t14. At Duke/UVA on a huge scholarship. Here two things matters. Your softs suck to be honest. Even the average t14 student will have better softs than that. However lucky for you softs don't really matter. Honestly you will likely get into GT/Cornell/NW and maybe Duke/UVA/Mich but with minimal scholarship. Every point above 170 is a ton of money you are leaving off the table.

Truthful answer? Retake for a few more points. Then enjoy like me. PM me if you'd like.

Also, you should not have your two letters be written by associates. You need academic recommendations. Maybe you could do 2 academic letters and 1 letter by a partner but both your letters written by associates will look weird and likely hurt you.

I echo all of this, but I especially want to emphasize the bit about the LORs. You shouldn't have two LORs from essentially the same source, and they absolutely shouldn't be from associates. I know, I know. They're lawyers, and that's really impressive. But you're applying to law school. They already know a ton of lawyers, and those lawyers can't speak to your academic abilities. If you're a corporate secretary, the associates likely can't speak to your work abilities either, unless you've been directly working under one of them.

Your letters need to come from people who know you in an academic or supervisory capacity. Not from people you think will sound important.
