H isn't out. It's not a guarantee, but chances are good. OP will have great options without a retake, and it sounds like s/he maxed out.

For the splitter question, how am I not?

For Harvard/Yale, my LSAT is below median of 173, but GPA is higher than medians.

As for the max out, if you look further back than the scores I posted, it's actually much better.

(the one I took directly before the oldest one in that picture was a 176).

Those late 60's PTs really killed me. Very disheartening when you see all 25 scores together.

"Splitters" are generally considered to be people over the LSAT median and under the GPA median. Your situation is referred to as being a "reverse-splitter"

I don't know that I'd retake in your position unless I was sure I could get at least 173 on the LSAT. You're only really below the LSAT median at Harvard, Yale, and Columbia and you are coming from a well-respected UG where your grades were fantastic.

You have an excellent shot at H and S as it is and if you don't get in, IMO, it'll be because of a non-numerical part of your app. I think you might do more for your chances at HYS by putting together a really strong application (references, resume, PS, etc.). If I were you, I'd take a couple of months this summer doing PTs and targeted drilling to see if you can get consistently into the 175+ range on your PTs. If you can, take in September. If not, then don't bother. A few extra points on the LSAT would help but they're not sufficient or necessary, especially for Yale and Stanford. You should be set for the rest of the T14 barring YP.

And don't be afraid to cancel in September if you retake and don't feel like you hit your mark. 171 is a solid score and you don't want to screw it up with a much lower retake because you had a bad day and were stubborn. And I know some people will say that retakes don't matter. At most places, they don't. If anyone cares, though, it'll be the ad comms at HYS.

OP, this is very solid advice. Chisel away at the sculpture that is your application package until it is Michaelangelic, and continue to prep for a retake in September. Don't be afraid, however, to sit out the test or cancel your score if you feel like you aren't making positive progress and/or you bombed.

Also, with regard to the bolded, with a 3.9X/17X you are not any kind of splitter -- you are someone with enviable stats. It could be worth your while to earn a few more LSAT points, but that fact does not a mild reverse splitter make!

Want to reiterate that you should retake, OP. You have nothing to lose. The two schools where a worse retake MAY hurt you are Y and S, and you're a longshot at both as is. H is much more numbers driven, and I think they'll gladly take the higher score, put it on their US news report, and be done with it. Which is to say, you prob can't hurt your chances at H with a worse score.

The poster who recommended spending the next two months crafting a standout application/PS is spot on. With no softs your PS is probably gonna be of critical importance at HYS. With the rest of your time, keep prepping for a retake. Come October you can plan to spend the next 10 months getting drunk and doing nothing. Just take the next 2 seriously.

Just want to chime in and say that I got both H and S with the same LSAT score and an only slightly higher GPA. I am a K-JD with good but not exceptional softs.

A retake isn't likely to hurt you, but at a 171, you're already in good shape. I personally would skip the retake and direct my energy towards the rest of my application -- resume, PS, etc.
