3.24 / 174 splitter - T14 $?

Postby Gungnir » Thu Nov 07, 2013 2:40 pm

I'm a splitter (3.24 / 174) without an addendum-worthy excuse for my low GPA. Upward trend with most of my poor grades in my first three semesters and good grades in my major. Pretty average softs (~1.5 years work experience, but mostly internships). Good LORs but probably not exceptional. I know it's tough to predict splitters, but what do you think my chances are for T14 with $?

Also, what about ED? UVA maybe?

CLS and NYU are your best bets. Don't ED anywhere. Northwestern will throw you some money.

I would advise against EDing, unless you're completely set on a school and they actually give a boost to ED applicants (some don't). Apps are continuing to fall this cycle so 170+ scorers will be in high demand for schools to maintain/rescue their medians.

Not to mention a significant percent of 170+ applicants don't enroll (I'll have to pull up the data). Interesting enough, that's pretty close to the number of 170+ applicants needed for the T14 some time back to maintain their class sizes/medians.

ED only reliably provides a boost at certain schools.

I agree not to ED.

However I should point out this isnt fully accurate: the ranges are a little broad. With below 25th%ile GPA, 176+ is different from 174, at least at CLS. Also, 3.4 is quite different from 3.2. If you go onto LSN and look at the data points making up these searches, its definitely the 175+/3.4+'s getting in, with the sub-3.3's hitting reserve or reject more often.

Just for clarification's sake, when KevinP wrote 'this cycle,' he meant 2012-2013. This cycle should see even fewer 170+ applicants. If the disproportionate drop in 170+ applicants continues, hopefully there'll only be something like 2000 170+ applicants. That'd be nice.
