3.5/173 URM

Postby teampeeta » Mon Oct 28, 2013 10:16 pm

Hey all,

I am a long time lurker and not-so-frequent poster on TLS. Just got my October LSAT score back and it's a 173. I know it's a good score but I'm a bit disappointed, tbh. I was scoring ~3 pts higher on most of my PTs and with my less-than-stellar 3.5X GPA, a 175+ LSAT would've been pretty awesome. I have taken the LSAT a couple of times now so I don't think I'll be retaking. I think on the right day I could get close to 180, but who knows whether the right day would be the day of the December LSAT or not- it's possible I could retake and do worse.

Anyway, I was hoping to go to a top 3 school or somewhere for free if I can swing it. What do you think my chances are?

FWIW, I am AA, my GPA is from a top 10 UG, and I do have an upward grade trend.

Thanks in advance and good luck to all!

You're already one of the most competitive AA applicants in the cycle. Odds are strongly in your favor for getting HS (and Y isn't out of the question). I don't know enough to be able to give particularly great advice about your chances at full rides.

Thanks! I know that not many AAs get scores in the 170s, so I'm pleased to have done well. But higher is almost always better as far as the LSAT goes...

Does anyone else have insights regarding my chances at YHS and full rides elsewhere in the T14?

Bueller? Bueller?

Seriously, y'all, I'm considering a December retake and could use any advice you have about my chances at YHS and full rides at the T14 with my current numbers! I'd like to have a good idea before I decide one way or the other.

Thanks!

Easy answer. If you feel like you can do better on a retake, retake. If you don't, then don't.

A 173 is not going to hold you back from anywhere.

Personally, I'd go for the retake. Just for the hell of it.

It's not a matter of wondering whether I can do better on a given day- I'm confident I could. I was averaging 175 on my PTs before October and got a 173. My best tests were 179-180. My worst ones were around 170. It's a matter of whether December 7th will be a 170-173 day or a 177-180 day. When you're talking about such a small difference (literally 3-4 questions between 173 and 177), it's kind of difficult to predict exactly how it'll go beforehand.

Do you think my odds would be way better with a 176+ score? I just don't want to screw things up by retaking and getting the same score or worse.

Retaking and doing the same/worse is basically not going to hurt you at all. On the flip side, your odds of getting into somewhere/with more money you wouldn't have gotten into/with the same amount of money are only marginally increased with a retake.

That said, you seem pretty confident that you scored on the low end of your PTs. At this point, your biggest concern should be whether or not you want to sit through another 6-hour long test.

I think you'll get in everywhere except maybe Yale (but strong chance) and your LSAT score is at or above all medians. Almost everyone scores 2-3 pts below their PT range so you did just as well as you could have anticipated!

Also, the only school where your admission is questionable would have much more concern with your grades than your LSAT. If you did get 176+, I'm surmising it wouldn't make any difference (although since there is exactly 0 data on this for yale, I couldn't know).

Looking forward to your cycle!

An AA with a 173 has no need to retake imo. Your GPA isn't even low for an AA either. Unless your dream school is Yale I wouldn't stress over a retake. I'd be shocked if you didn't get H.
