3.7 GPA and 170 LSAT

I'm planning to start law school in 2014 and would like an input on my top 14 odds. I've a 3.7 GPA and a 170 LSAT and am a white male...am aiming for patent law.

As far as softs, I graduated with a computer engineering/Plan II (liberal arts) honors degree from UT Austin and have been working full time at JP Morgan as a front office derivatives developer. For what it's worth (sounds like not too much in law school admissions) I should have very strong letters from a former engineering professor and my current boss. Also I paid my way through school.

I've run all the calculators online but would like any confirmation on where I should apply. Also any advice on what I could do between now and later in the year to shore things up would mean a lot.

Do you think there's anything specific about my application that would be worse/better than the averages there?

From what I've seen I've a chance at the 5-7 schools but a better chance at 8-14.
>>If that's true is there anything what can someone like me do to improve the 5-7 odds?

You're not special, just like no one else here is special. Go ahead and apply and see if they want you, but the only way you increase your odds are retaking the LSAT (or cure cancer, whichever is easier). Beyond that, roll the dice and see what the ADCOMs say. They are the only ones who know whether they want you.

Yup, go to LSN. Your softs are mediocre to slightly above average. In at schools ranked 7 and below, maybe in at NYU, probably out at Chicago and up. Good luck.

If at all possible, I would retake. The marginal benefit from adding 2-3 points to you LSAT is tremendous (it will put you over the LSAT median at GVPN, etc.) and give you a better chance of getting accepting and getting $
