3.38 GPA 177 LSAT

Postby lawschoolpipedreams » Mon Feb 04, 2013 3:53 am

I am graduating in May of this year. Last year, I had to withdraw from school for a semester due to a family medical emergency. I went back the subsequent semester, but again had to withdraw while studying abroad over the summer because that family issue arose again. Because of that, I have a less-than-stellar GPA, but my LSAT score is decent. I was wondering if those two withdrawals will affect my chances of getting into some T-14 schools. I'm planning on explaining my situation in an addendum, but don't know how much they would take that into consideration when deciding on my application. Would any of you recommend staying an extra semester to boost up my GPA while still applying in the fall? I'm applying to the following schools:

Columbia
NYU
Penn
Michigan
Georgetown
Duke
BU

My boyfriend is at Duke for grad school, so that's where I'm hoping to go. However, I'm realistic. I've heard that Duke likes higher GPA's, so I'm wondering if I even have a shot with my high LSAT score, or if boosting up my GPA would help. Also, would applying early decision significantly increase my chances? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I've been pretty anxious about this. Thanks!

There's been two admits this cycle on LSN with a 177/3.4 and 177/3.3 - you may be fine. Duke may also give you a priority track application, based off your LSAT score (this is automatic and done through LSAC, not sure if their criteria involves pure LSAT alone or a combined LSAT/GPA formula) - this means you'll get your decision 10 days after you apply. It doesn't mean you get an admissions boost, just that they'll let you know faster.

You've got a great chance.

If you really want to do all you can to boost your GPA, an extra semester might help - but do some research. How much would straight A's boost your GPA over one extra semester? Are you confident you can get straight A's? Is a one semester boost worth the extra costs of that semester, and will the assumed GPA jump mean anything substantial for your admissions chances?

If you can bring it up past a 3.5, you might be looking at some great schools. That said, you've got a solid shot at Duke as is, if I had to guess. Not guaranteed but preetty solid - and hey, truthfully, your addendum counts, and definitely do write the "Why Duke" supplementary statement!

Be sure to mention your boyfriend attending grad school in that. Good luck!

You are pretty much a lock for NYU and Duke. Possible at Columbia but probably waitlisted. Good luck!

Depends on how serious the relationship is and how much money you get from Duke.

She is absolutely NOT a lock at Duke. Why aren't you looking at LSN? Duke has a soft floor at 3.5 and they don't dip below that very often even for high LSAT's. OP, you may sneak in off the WL at Duke thanks to the decline in apps but there's a very good chance you won't get in.

I wouldn't call him a lock at NYU either - maybe a 70-80% chance.

At this point if you really want Duke do as much as you can to hit 3.5 before graduation

This is true. Although Duke seems to be more willing to take extreme traditional splitters such as yourself this cycle than they were last cycle, you are by no means a "lock" unless you are a URM and forgot to mention that fact. You are for the most part a lock at NYU, however. People with numbers around yours (actually a little worse) have made it into Columbia off the wait-list within recent years, so to be honest ED'ing to Columbia would be what I would do if I had your numbers. :|

If he's a lock for NYU he should not be EDing to Columbia unless money is not an issue and his parents are paying or something.

True. (That's also why I said if I had her numbers. :P I would take Columbia at sticker over NYU at scholly any day of the week, but I have very particular reasons for this that wouldn't likely apply to many others in an otherwise similar situation.)

what are those, if you don't mind me asking?

The fact that she's a woman could giver her a boost as well. There's been a shortage of female applicants that's being exacerbated even more by the significant decline in apps, especially from those with high LSATs.

But, I agree with the posters above in that you should go to the best school/money type combo you can get into unless your relationship is fairly serious or long term. The number of long term relationships I've seen go poof during law school.... yikes. I wouldn't make a decision as important as this on the basis of a bf/gf without thinking long and hard about it.

Even if the relationship ends, Duke isn't a terrible school to be stuck at by any means. That said, I've been with my own SO for a very long time, and I don't think that our relationship alone would be enough for me to take Duke over Columbia. It would be different if you were married, OP. Long-distance blows, but there are worse things in life.
