T-14 Chances? 172/2.94/URM/2years WE
2.94 from Boston University...known for grade deflation. Mom had major health issues throughout which definitely took a toll on grades.
AFAM Female. Low income background. I speak four languages fluently (not sure if this matters).
Did Teach For America post undergrad. Will have a Masters in Education with a 3.85+ gpa in May
Softs: President of Black Student Union, Founder of campus org that led capacity building workshops for struggling microenterprises in South America (what my PS is mostly about). MANY other leadership roles altruistic in nature. Accepted for a Fulbright Research Grant.
Are any T-14's options? If not, what can I do to improve my chances for later cycles?

Man, having a 3.0 would make a world of difference. With that said, as an AA your LSAT is in a very very elite group. the general consensus is 170+ and under 3.0 gpa with work experience is Northwestern. With that said, as an AA you actually have many more options.. assuming they will look over your gpa. I would first recommend you do whatever possible to get it above a 3.0 (can you go to a CC to take more classes just to boost it?) If you can't I would personally blanket Columbia and down. You are probably getting MVP and below for sure. You also have decent softs, which may help with the GPA.reachercreacher wrote:2.94 from Boston University...known for grade deflation. You've got a shot everywhere with a 172 and AA URM status. The sub-3.0 GPA won't do you any favors though. Apply broadly and put some effort in to your PS/DS.

I KNOW! I'm killing myself over that +0.06 .... definitely going to look into options for boosting even if it costs. I think BU makes you take their courses though

If you were awarded your degree already your LSDAS GPA can't be changed.reachercreacher wrote:I KNOW! I'm killing myself over that +0.06 .... definitely going to look into options for boosting even if it costs. I think BU makes you take their courses though

So what if you took community college classes that didn't factor into your degree, but you took them before you got your undergrad diploma?bdubs wrote:If you were awarded your degree already your LSDAS GPA can't be changed.reachercreacher wrote:I KNOW! 172 AA URM female is an incredibly small group of people. AA URM boost is huge, and you never know who will bite. Without URM you'd be in at northwestern so don't think that's as high as you can go. H gives the biggest boost to AA URM of anyone, and they'll almost definitely be at 172 median next year if that's when you're applying, so definitely apply there. Just ask for waivers and blanket T14.

I completely agree with this. IMHO it would be worth if for you to enroll in a few easy CC classes to hit at least a 3.0 GPA... your LSAT score is insanely high relative to the that of most AAs (there are probably only a dozen or so AAs that scored higher than you), so you've definitely got that going for you.Dmini7 wrote:Man, having a 3.0 would make a world of difference. I bet you'll still have a killer cycle even with that low GPA, though. Your softs are quite strong.

Those count for LSDAS. In fact, it's not even optional you have to submit them. They just have to be completed prior to your degree being conferred.TryHard wrote:So what if you took community college classes that didn't factor into your degree, but you took them before you got your undergrad diploma?bdubs wrote:If you were awarded your degree already your LSDAS GPA can't be changed.reachercreacher wrote:I KNOW! What are you talking about? This was front page of the nyt in the mid 2000s and the average law school applicant out of the school is a 3.4 ish. Pretty low.stillwater wrote:LOL at BU grade deflation. 4.0 factory

No T14 considers BU to be prestigious/cares about its grade deflation. HTHonionz wrote:What are you talking about? This was front page of the nyt in the mid 2000s and the average law school applicant out of the school is a 3.4 ish. Pretty low.stillwater wrote:LOL at BU grade deflation. 4.0 factory

Excellent chance at Northwestern.
You might have even had a shot at NU without being URM. With that...maybe even some money?

Columbia? Georgetown? Those are my top choices.
Thanks so much for the feedback thus far! Definitely has encouraged me to apply to more places then I originally thought was possible.

Columbia is very unlikely with your GPA. Your odds at GULC, on the other hand, are very good. This is a strange cycle, though, and URM splitter cycles are always unpredictable. You should apply widely in the non-YHS T14.
Strongly consider Northwestern over Georgetown, assuming you get into both. GULC significantly trails the rest of the T14 in placement.

Re: T-14 Chances? 172/2.94/URM/2years WE
While your GPA is pretty low, your URM and softs (especially that 3.85 in a masters program) will make some difference. Addendum your GPA, and show adcoms that your real ability is more reflective of that 3.85 masters than your 2.94 undergrad. If i were you id apply 7-14 in T-14, and throw in apps to other T-14s you would like (theres always a long shot). Also UCLA, Twin Cities, Emory, USC, vandy, and schools in that range should also be considered, since your 172 would be so rare that they might throw in some money which you could hopefully leverage. Finally if you are dead set on t-14, you could do Gulc part time (assuming you dont get in anywhere else, which is doubtful) and transfer into its full time program after a semester. Splitter cycles are completely unpredictable, add in your URM, and its even more chancey. Regardless you have pretty good shots everywhere below HYS CCN and B(because of thier love of GPA's), GL =)

NU is not giving a $150K scholarship to someone with a sub-3.0 GPA.BerkeleyBear wrote:ED at NU and profit!!

A URM with a 2.94/172 with work experience has a good shot. It's obviously worth it to ED, you either get a full-ride to NU or get denied.Ti Malice wrote:NU is not giving a $150K scholarship to someone with a sub-3.0 GPA.BerkeleyBear wrote:ED at NU and profit!!

No, URM or not, an applicant with a sub-3.0 GPA has no shot at getting into NU by ED.BerkeleyBear wrote:A URM with a 2.94/172 with work experience has a good shot. 3.42 (I believe) is the national average for law school applicants. BU is a good school, but not so much that I'd imagine it being that much higher than the average.onionz wrote:What are you talking about?
