Re: Too late to apply to Harvard? (3.6 / 165 / URM - AA)

Even with the URM boost you are well below both 25ths. If you really want H you're gonna need a higher LSAT. If you can get Median (173) the URM could very well outweigh the sub 25 GPA I'd think.

That's what I figured. Even if I were to have a chance at slipping in, I probably would have had to apply back in October, huh?

Harvard has admitted quite a few people this cycle already, but in general this cycle has been verrry friendly to late apps. I don't think applying right now would be much of a problem if you were at one of their medians.

Its estimated only about 15 AAs score 168+ per cycle. Harvard admits about 50 AAs per cycle.

Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone. My chances are probably slim to none but hey, if I didn't at least apply, I'd regret it someday.

You would be making one of the biggest mistakes of your life by not applying. I have a AA female friend that earned a dual JD/MBA at Harvard. She had almost your exact stats. She was admitted I think to almost every T-14. I don't know what happened at Yale though. Your undergrad is ironically ranked fairly close to ours. Good luck. Don't be dumb. Apply!!!

PRgradBYU wrote:I posted earlier this week, but I was wondering if you guys think it is too late to apply to Harvard this cycle. Do you guys think it's even worth it at this point? Harvard is definitely a long shot for me, but again, here is my info: 3.6 LGPA, 165, URM (AA), Mormon (not that it matters), decently solid softs. I'm assuming that with my numbers, it probably wouldn't make much sense but I'm curious to get some input. I value your guys' opinions a lot. It's one of those situations where I don't want to wonder "what if?" for the rest of my life, you know?

If I were you, I would apply. You summed it up best in your last sentence.

Would a higher LSAT score at or above medium be ideal to give you a better chance at acceptance? Yes, of course. However, you may have softs that they find interesting enough to forgive a GPA and LSAT below their 25th percentile. At the end of the day a 165 is solid, and in a scenario with your numbers, I would let Harvard tell me no.

Also, your timing is on the late side, but that shouldn't be of great concern. Although Harvard has notified a decent amount of URMs at this point, typically most URM decisions don't happen until April or May (they tend to weigh the URM pool in its entirety). Yes, it could have helped if you submitted in September, but unfortunately you no longer have that option. The low number of applicants this season, the fact your are AA male, and your solid scores lead me to believe your late-ish application shouldn't hurt you too much.

Again, I would apply...and I would submit my application yesterday.

My application is in! Luckily I'd already prepared a semi-brief statement on a professionally edited article I've produced beforehand (oddly enough). To be frank, I didn't realize Harvard admitted so many AAs. You're right--it would have been nice to be able to re-take the LSAT, but at this point in the admissions process that wouldn't make much sense. Let's just hope I didn't shoot myself in the foot by applying this late. Thanks for the help and good luck, everyone!

lol @ the people saying there is only a slight chance. You are in at the t6 and likely in at HS. Congrats.

Mormons have been cleaning up on LSN this year. While the no coffee thing would absolutely kill me, I am a little jealous...

You've got a chance OP but you're not auto-admit at all. But definitely apply. Best of luck.

I agree, John_rizzy_rawls. I mostly decided to apply there out of curiosity; at best, I'd put my chances at 15% or so. To be honest I'm actually more interested in going to a school like Columbia (as a reach school), though.

And Yukos, the no coffee thing really isn't that bad once you're used to it. :) Then again, that's just how I was raised. It would probably be an entirely different story if I were hooked on it now.

By the way, how are you able to see how other Mormon applicants are faring this cycle on LSN?

For whatever reason, there's a few Mormon applicants with near-identical numbers to me (I know they're Mormon because being a missionary is a big enough soft that they always mention it on LSN :) ) so I've been following them anyway (it also helps that they're all super nice). I just found out another prominent TLSer is a Mormon and he got his first choice law school.

Is it because they're visiting each of the schools in person?

I'm sorry I had to.

Nice! I really ought to create a profile on LSN and start following people with similar numbers, too. That's a great idea.

And I see what you did there, TripTrip... I guess I can't fault you for seeing an opportunity and taking it.

To be fair, your chances are a bit higher than 15%. The number of AA applicants scoring above 160 was the second largest declining LSAT-taking demographic (first being 175+ scorers). With apps way down, especially qualified AA apps, you have a decent chance being above 3.5 GPA. That's a decent combo given the current state of things.

From what I've been hearing, this is shaping up to be a pretty crazy cycle. Are apps really down by almost 20%? I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best at this point.
