Post by rvadog » Thu Jan 03, 2013 1:30 pm

What are my chances with this split?

I'm bringing my GPA up every semester but that this will be my GPA when I apply this upcoming fall. I know if I get denied I can keep applying as I take classes but just wondering what the chance would be this cycle.

Bonus Softs:
Major community involvment with Big Brothers program
4 Years military in various leadership programs
VA Resident

If you can get your GPA up to the 3.0 area, you've got UVA for sure (especially as a VA resident). I wouldn't go to W&M, since with a 2.3, there's no way you're going to get scholarship money, if you even get in at all.

This guy makes me think you have hope with an ED, even sub-3.0

I'm not stressed about money. I have post 9/11 GI bill and both schools are yellow ribbon. UVA would be my dream but I'm not going to be able to get my GPA above 2.8 and I plan on appying this next cycle...

That does change things if you'd be able to go to W&M for free. I looked at the LSN data, and it looks like you have a pretty good shot at W&M even with your GPA as low as it is. I'm not super familiar with the GI bill or which schools do Yellow Ribbon, but Georgetown will probably take you ED with a 2.5~.

You're probably wondering why I'm urging you away from W&M.

For comparison's sake, GULC (also considering a number of people at GULC are policy folks that were doing the part time/night program)

Or UVA/Northwestern:

You're very much a splitter, but if you can get significant money from the GI bill or Yellow Ribbon program and get in to any one of these schools, you're in better shape than at W&M.

You should get 4.0s both semesters of your senior year and apply the following cycle. If you get 4.0s throughout your senior year, you can pull your GPA to around 2.80. If you do that, UVA, Northwestern and Georgetown all become very much within your reach.

Don't go into the admissions cycle with such a low GPA when you have the chance to boost it up much higher.

This. Also, consider taking easy community college courses during the summer; since there are usually two summer terms and you can take two classes at a time, that's four As (hopefully).

Law schools won't care at all that you took classes at a community college, if you're worried about that. Make sure, though, that you take those classes before you finish your degree.
