Chances at U of Miami 170 LSAT and 3.07 GPA

Post by pecchiord1 » Wed Oct 17, 2012 11:01 pm

For multiple reasons, I really want to attend the University of Miami. 170 LSAT is strong and I'm hoping it will counteract the 3.07 low GPA (below the 25th). I have some decent softs and recommendations.

What are my chances?

I know nothing about Umiami, though I would imagine you are in fine. I qould question whether you should attend without substancial scholarship though being that they seem to have high tuition rate. With your numbers I would imagine you could pull some low t 14 schools. Is your gpa already set?

Why don't you just ED to UVA?

Miami (LinkRemoved) vs. Virginia (LinkRemoved)

I can't even imagine how large the stipend would have to be, on top of a full tuition scholarship, for me to consider going to a law school where only about half of graduates become lawyers over a school where 95% do.

Maybe 100k/year stip for 10 years? IDK debatable even then.

thanks for the responses!

I have gotten a fee waiver or two from higher ranking schools, but I am decently invovled with some alumni from the school/in the area etc. Alumni relationships v. Rankings--are they of equal importance?

Virginia is a great choice, but I was a little suspect of the fee waiver they sent me because of my low GPA.

Other schools I've considered are American, George Mason, Florida, and FSU. But my strongest connections are in Miami area.

That you made a fake account and posts to get people to respond. It's hard to believe that someone would want to stay in Miami so bad but then they would consider American (which is an objectively terrible school that TLS hates) but not UVA (which is splitter friendly as all hell and a TLS darling).

If this is real I would just ED UVA and only consider other places if you don't get accepted. Rankings are probably a lot more important than your connections (or perception of your connections depending on how deeply they actually run), UVA is a very good highly ranked school, and you have a good shot there if you ED.

I appreciate the response. The only hang up I have with UVA is its location. I am very suspect of going to schools that are NOT remotely connected with a big city as my undergraduate claimed that the hour and a half drive to Pittsburgh was not enough to deter externships opportunities, connections, etc. Maybe that's misguided but I know people and lawyers and the like that will make finding an internship etc. very easy for me. Also, I'm very interested in Miami's study abroad connection w/ Rio as I have family members who live in that part of Brazil. And why does TLS hate American? I lived in Tenleytown (the American U neighborhood in DC) and didn't hear anything bad about the school (actually I worked in the Office of International Affairs of Homeland Security and worked with MULTIPLE graduates of American U). Haha am I totally misinformed? I don't have many good advisors in my life haah

Yeah dude, you're pretty misinformed. Hence the incredulity your posts have been met with. Read more on TLS about how legal hiring works and research employment statistics before you throw your 98th percentile LSAT score into a dumpster fire.

Your chances at UVA would likely be higher if you ED'd. Also, notice the number of 170s applying to Miami is 0. That is because people with 170s can get into schools with significantly better employment prospects.

You need to ED UVA. Your chances of doing real lawyer work is so much better than all the schools you are looking at. And send in apps to Gtown, Cornell, Michigan, and Duke (all with medians lower than 170). If you have work experience, Northwestern too. And Vandy since you like the south.

If you don't go to a T14, you should go to a T25 (not that its a real thing) with serious moneys. ie. Emory/BC/BU/GW with a full or nearly full scholarship.

But please do your research first.

Think about if you want biglaw or not. Although UVA has a nice LRAP program, government jobs are scarce. It is still a ton of debt. Don't just go 240k in the hole because a random interneter told you to. Research the job market, you interests, where you want to work, etc. If you have a family member in Miami that wants to hire you no matter what you do in law school, and that's what you want to do, then you should go somewhere that minimizes debt. It's hard to explain just how much $240k is.

And if you're not ready this year, you can always wait a cycle. With apps decreasing, next cycle could be even better than this one for splitters. As schools drop their medians, 170+ LSATs become more and more sought after.

I'd take a scholarship at Florida with those numbers but I'm clearly biased.
