Splitter URM - Chance Me!
Hey guys,
I've taken everyone's advice from last year and decided to take a year off and retake the LSAT. I'm happy to say that I managed to increase my score by six points this time around and managed to pull off a 160.
Obviously, with my 2.9 GPA it'll be tough breaking into some of the T20, but I'm optimistic that my substantive work experience from taking a year off in addition to my college softs (fraternity president, D-II athlete, etc.) will help boost my chances. I'd also like to throw an ED out at one of my reaches, so hopefully that'll improve my chances there. Still trying to pick which school to ED to, but I have the list down to a few schools. Also looking for chances on my targets. Please help!
Stats: 160/2.94, URM (Asian-American)
ED candidates:
UPenn
Seton Hall
Northwestern (I'm hoping my WE will help here)
Target Schools (RD)
Drexel
Boston College
Gonzaga
American U.
WUSTL (Heard they're splitter-friendly)
George Washington
Hofstra
Safeties
Thomas Jefferson
Stetson
Georgetown (Part-time)
Michigan State
Arizona State

I'm pretty sure that Asian-American doesn't count as URM for law school admissions.

I'll nibble anyway as I got time....
You're not a splitter and you're not urm. You're just a dude with a low gpa and shitty lsat.

Top 80th percentile = shitty LSAT?NoodleyOne wrote:I'll nibble anyway as I got time....

TLS harbors a skewed populace who generally think any score below 170 sucks. *shrug. Don't take it personally.onlyV100 wrote:Top 80th percentile = shitty LSAT?NoodleyOne wrote:I'll nibble anyway as I got time....

And I'm afraid you are not a URM. I would forget about Northwestern with your LSAT. You would need to retake for at least a 172 to have a shot ED.
Good luck!

Shitty is harsh, but to qualify as a true splitter generally you have upper 160s/break 170.onlyV100 wrote:Top 80th percentile = shitty LSAT?NoodleyOne wrote:I'll nibble anyway as I got time....

And the percentiles for the LSAT can be extremely misleading in terms of how "good" they are. It's not that anything below 170 sucks, it's that you're not going to get into a school worth going to/get enough $$$ to justify going to a certain school if you have a 160 and aren't an URM

Also, your school list makes no sense whatsoever. For example, Georgetown, even PT, is definitely not considered a safety for you. I don't see how you could group Georgetown and Thomas Jefferson in the same category.onlyV100 wrote: ED candidates:

Georgetown part time as a safety? Good work.

No preference as to practice area; I like both SD and DC. Could you help revise my list?GAIAtheCHEERLEADER wrote:Also, your school list makes no sense whatsoever. Practice area aside, your list is simply all over the place. Start by putting your numbers in Law School Predictor and checking out Law School Numbers. See what schools are within your range and then come back to us!onlyV100 wrote:No preference as to practice area; I like both SD and DC. Could you help revise my list?

No. OP is a splitter anywhere they are at or above the 75th..moonman157 wrote: Shitty is harsh, but to qualify as a true splitter generally you have upper 160s/break 170.
OP, you probably wont get into any schools where you are below both medians. Your reaches should be schools with medians of 160 and your targets should be schools with a 75th of 160.
You should retake in October or December.

Re: Splitter URM - Chance Me!
Retaking is not an option, I'm afraid. I'd like to know where I stand at the schools I have listed with my current numbers. I know my GPA isn't great, but I was very involved during undergrad and have a lot strong softs. I think my URM status in addition to my LSAT puts me in a decent position to land some of the lower T14, and I'd like to hear your thoughts on the matter. To which school should I apply ED? I know I didn't list UVA, but I have ties to West Virginia (my friend went to school there); should I throw in an ED there now (so I can get a decision within the two weeks)?Nova wrote:No. OP is a splitter anywhere they are at or above the 75th..moonman157 wrote: Shitty is harsh, but to qualify as a true splitter generally you have upper 160s/break 170.
