HELP! 164/ 3.74 Finance major. Michigan State

Hey guys,

I want to go to a t-14 more than all of you (obviously).

I was wondering if any of you had any advice given the fact I have a 164 LSAT (june 2012) score- my first time. I have a 3.74 gpa as a finance major at Michigan State.

My personal statement is going to be about how I was in quite a bit of drinking/marijuana related trouble when between 13-18 yrs old. Nothing serious, just mip(s) and one possession.

What do you think my chances are at various t14 schools? I am thinking ed at UVA and a blanket of t14 minus HYS. Any advice???

Thanks so much.

Two bits of advice:

1. Retake the LSAT. Assuming you are non-URM, your chances of a T14 acceptance are very slim.

2. Change your PS topic.

You are almost assuredly not getting a T14 without a retake. It might be a bit sobering, but check this link out.

Really you either need to retake or lower your expectations considerably.

I do understand that my chances are not great. The LSN numbers are sobering but I would say chances are slim, but not zero?

The problem is that retake is not until October and I want to apply as early in the cycle as possible and was told schools often hold off on application review when a retake is scheduled.

How much of a boost does an early application really give a candidate?

Also, I was thinking ED at Georgetown now as their medians are a bit lower.

Between 25-35 I should have quite a bit of scholarship opportunity, right?

I really don't think there will be a ton of scholarship opportunity in that range, tbh. Your GPA is good enough for anywhere (minus HYS probably), but that LSAT score is really what's holding you back. You could probably be looking at some scholarships in that range with a 167-168, and you definitely would get some good looks in the t14 at 168-169. It's fine to apply to some schools that you know you'll get WL or dinged at, but you just need to set the expectations at a more realistic level (given your current score) so you give yourself the best opportunities! I'd look at schools like SMU, ASU and Arizona, Houston, and a few others with a decent legal market and schools that feed into them with your current score.

Far less of a boost than one would get with even just two more points on the LSAT. The timing of your application should be the least of your concerns right now. Retake.

And an app submitted by late October/early November is plenty early anyway.
