3.71 and 158

Postby sergiokun16 » Thu Jul 12, 2012 10:29 am

Alright here's a disclaimer before everyone starts screaming "RETAKE!". While I am fully aware it's not a very good score, 158 is a good score FOR ME. My best practice score out of ~16 PT's was a 160, ONE TIME. I have alot of internship/fellowship experience to supplement my application,, good recs, extracurriculars in leadership positions, etc., but just wanted to hear what everyone thinks. Here are some of my schools, not necessarily in any order:

-Ohio St.
-Wake
-UCONN
-Pitt
-American
-Penn State
-Temple
-Catholic
-Brooklyn

You should retake in October. I probably took about 15 practice tests under 160 too. Then I took 40 more and eventually scored higher. Its really worth the investment if you have retakes left. A few more points would likely translate into big money at the T2s you have listed.

Yeah, if you only took ~16 PTs, then you have room for improvement. RETAKE.

Thanks for the honest feedback (and you didn't say it like an elitist either haha). I'm resisting taking again probably because of the mental/physical investment of waiting, but I want it bad enough so I'm seriously considering it.

I know you weren't talking to me here, but I will say that I totally get how much retaking sucks. I've taken the LSAT three times, and I've only improved 2 points from my original score. I still think those 2 points will make a difference when they put me over a school's 75th percentile or median. I don't say RETAKE willy-nilly. I think you can improve.

I quoted him but that was for both of you. I know I could easily get into a regional school with money, but I don't want to feel like I'm settling after all the work I've already put in. While I could get into some of the T2's on my list, I want money if possible. I'm just afraid of having a score that decreases from my original score, getting me no where and making me lose out on getting into the cycle early.

If you apply the right after October scores come out, you will still be early. If you get a lower score, it doesn't matter: schools will only consider your highest. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Don't discount your abilities, the LSAT is a very learnable test. The idea of investing time and effort into a retake certainly doesn't sound appealing, but it's honestly not nearly as bad as it seems and it's definitely worth it. Even if you boost that LSAT up to a 160, new doors could open for you. You've got a strong GPA, and it would be a shame to waste it on a 158. Find some inspiration, kick the October LSAT's ass, and set yourself up for a better legal future.

You'll probably be waitlisted at WFU; if not, then it should be good news.

http://www.lawschoolnumbers.com should help.

I had similar numbers (worse GPA, higher LSAT), and:

In at Pitt w/$
In at PSU w/$
WL Temple
Rejected Wake

Good luck.

So you really think my chances are high for getting into UConn? It's been my top choice for a while, and I'm just afraid of not improving my score, or worse, decreasing it and hurting my chances in the long-run. Shit, it's a beautiful test lol, nothing has ever messed with my head like this.

It wont. Schools only care about your highest score because that is what they have to report to USNWR. Yeah, you have good shot at UCONN. Close to a coin flip, but more likely in than not.

I had pretty much the same scores as you and just was taken off the waitlist at George Washington so just remember anything can happen.

You looked at less than 25% of the available LSAT questions, yet you've decided you've peaked? What exactly did your study involve in addition to taking PTs?

Don't give up man. I couldn't ever break 160 in PTs. Took about as many as you did. I kept getting 155s and such. Test day came around and I busted out a 162. Now that I actually know my studying has been working I have motivation to do even more and retake in October. Don't settle for anything and check TLS daily to make sure you don't lose sight. If you talk to most people they're stoked for you to get a 162. If you come on TLS, all you hear is retake, retake, RETAKE, WE FUCKING SAID RETAKE IDIOT! TLS is like a free personal trainer, they don't let you settle for mediocre or a little better than mediocre and as far as I'm concerned that's a good thing. So, RETAKE! :)
