3.83 and 169. Any chance at Berkely?

Postby fdo15 » Wed Jul 11, 2012 11:22 am

If you look at the medians and 75th percentiles I feel like I have a decent shot, but if you look at the graphs everyone with my stats seems to be getting rejected. Anyone know why that is?

mylsn.info has you at 28% (not including URM)
Boalt tends to be more holistic in approach, so don't discount softs/PS/LOR/etc.

Berkeley is a shit show. They been known to reject 4.0/180's and accept 3.0/160's. LSN's data reflects this unpredictability. On one hand, if they like your PS and other "soft" factors about you it's possible to outperform your numbers and get accepted, or you could get rejected despite being above both of their 75th marks.

Lol no. Berkeley would probably be the last school outside YHS to accept a student with a 3.0. Also OP is not above 75th GPA.

Would you guys recommend retaking the LSAT? My 169 in June was my first time, and there's a chance I could do better, but is there a lot to be gained if I'm already at their 75th percentile? I guess I'm just getting the feeling that if I don't get in it won't be because my LSAT was holding me back.

Also, if I don't retake I can apply very early, which I've heard is pretty helpful at Berkely. In my situation is a possible 1 or 2 point increase in my LSAT worth giving up the advantage I would gain by applying before all of the people who are retaking in October? I realize the answer is probably yes for schools with a 170 median, but is this also the case at Berkely?

Anyone have any advice/answers to my questions from two posts ago? I told myself I would decide about retaking by the end of July and I'm still not sure.

There's no good reason not to retake. They'll just take your higher score. Looks like a 172 will put you in very comfortable territory on LSN. You can also use it for more $$.

You can, and should, still apply early in the cycle. Just send them the updated results once they come in.

Not at Boalt. OP is already at 75th percentile, even if Cal cared about numbers (which for the most part they don't) retaking would be of limited value. OP needs to focus on LORs/PS/cultivating softs right now.

Now, if we're talking about outside of Boalt, then yeah, retaking is a good idea. A 174+ would give him a 50/50 shot at H.

3.83 and 169. Any chance at Berkely?

Step 1: Learn to spell Berkeley.
Step 2: Apply and enjoy a pretty good shot at getting in if you don't screw up your app.

This.

Also I'm a 172 (retake) w/ 3.81 GPA and I'm going to be class of 2015, so you definitely have a shot without retaking. And unless you're going to get a 174+ retaking for Berkeley isn't really gonna help because 2-3 points difference isn't that significant.

That prediction is way off, since it includes data back to 2003. Medians have climbed substantially since then. Limiting the data to the last four cycles produces very different results: http://myLSN.info/dispresults.php?sk=u1xyq.

The data appears to indicate otherwise:
