Early decision - URM 162/3.55 Military

Postby Mherrera13 » Tue Jun 19, 2012 12:11 pm

Hi y'all,

I'm an LT in the army (former SGT). I am an URM have a 162 LSAT and a 3.55 GPA. I cannot afford to take another LSAT due to certain training constraints.

I will have a year out of "college" under my belt before attending law school. I want to apply early decision to one of my reach schools.

Given my numbers/background. Which early decision would I have the best shot:
Georgetown
UPenn
Northwestern
Notre Dame
UVA

Thank ahead of time for any help

It will depend on which URM you are, AA garnishing the largest bump. Thank you for your service and goodluck in your cycle!

You're in at GULC easily. I'd also bet you'll be in at Michigan and Duke. Blanket the T14 and some safety schools. It's going to be hit and miss with that LSAT, though. If there's any way to retake, do so -- you could be looking at CCN.

ED to Penn if you are sure u only want to go to the schools on this list. Is $$ going to be deciding factor?

Money could be a factor. The post 9/11 GI bill helps out a bit and so does the yellow ribbon program. But obviously money is huge. What is your advice in both cases? (money being a big factor and not)

May you clarify why one over other?

Thanks for the help

if money is going to be an issue you have to decide on whether you should ED or not. Based on your numbers alone I don't think you are going to get a huge scholarship from Penn. So you need to see how much of your tuition is covered by the programs you mentioned above. Applying to a school through ED may give you a boost (in terms of admissions) but it also hinders scholarship negotiation. Ff in the end you cannot afford to go, you will have to wait out the cycle and apply the following year.

Throw in Michigan. Unlimited Yellow Ribbon funds = free tuition with your Post-9/11. Good luck.

Apply Cornell & Mich - only two schools with unlimited slots and unlimited funding for GI/YR.

NU only has 10 or 15 slots for law; some schools may not give you too much money if they know that they can pull GI/YR out of you. May as well reward the schools who are willing to go all the way with the GI/YR.

GULC matches the least amount of funding out of the T14. If they do not give you a scholly, you will only get about 17.5 k + 5k (2.5k x2 YR) from VA/GULC. As you can see, that is paltry.

Considering that better schools than GULC are willing to give more money to vets, you should seriously consider whether or not attending is worth it.
