Plenty of people get into the M7 with only 2-3 years of experience (some in some very unimpressive areas), so I'm not sure JAG is necessary. However, hoping to get a good grade to offset a 2.1 is a pipedream (almost as absurd as going to a T2 with the intent to transfer). Law school is one of the most harshly graded graduate schools. Why not get a Masters in Economics or Finance as the temporary, grade-inflating degree?owwo wrote: the long and short of my "why" - one of my end goals is to finish with an MBA from HBS...obviously my 2.1 isn't going to cut it. i hope to leverage my gpa from law school (conditional of course on me actually making the grades) to land a position with military jag (af/navy, in order of preference). my hope is that my work experience in the private sector, my high gpa from law school, and my service as a jag would be enough to tip the scales in my favor with HBS.

Someone mentioned that my 2.1 would haunt me. As an HBS applicant, how would I rate with 6+ years of WE, a Masters in Finance (and high gpa) and my 2.1 in the distant corner vs 6+ yrs, JD (high gpa), JAG and my lurking 2.1? All in all, I'm doing what I can to make me a more "rounded" applicant to get admitted into HBS.owwo wrote: the long and short of my "why" - one of my end goals is to finish with an MBA from HBS...obviously my 2.1 isn't going to cut it. i hope to leverage my gpa from law school (conditional of course on me actually making the grades) to land a position with military jag (af/navy, in order of preference). my hope is that my work experience in the private sector, my high gpa from law school, and my service as a jag would be enough to tip the scales in my favor with HBS.

I'm not an expert on business schools, so I'm not going to respond to this, beyond saying I think this plan seems a little insane -- why do want to go to business school so badly? Most people seem to view business school these days as the back-up to finding the job you actually want.
More relevantly, I think you need to do more research into what background you actually need as a politician. I worked for a lawyer running for congress, and I can tell you that it in fact, it did hurt them. People don't like lawyers; they do like small businessman. If you want to run in politics you'd be better off spending your time and money investing/building a network in the community you want to represent.
In response to your actual questions, I think WUSTL is the right answer. If you pull up your LSAT by several points, Northwestern would be a good option as well. Otherwise, I'd blanket T1 and splitter schools. I don't think you mentioned a region preference, which is going to play strongly into this.

And this is the reason for "why do you want to go to law school?"

Re: I love me some tier 2
you have partial ownership in a company with over 10 million in assets but you want to go to a shitty law school and hope to do well to then spend more time in business school?
Oh and this is not just any business school, but Harvard. But thats only after you get great grades (not easy to do in law school), work in JAG (not easy to get a position in with no military exp) and do some political work?
Sorry man, but your dreams are unrealistic. If you actually have a company worth that much focus on expanding that. Dont go to law school to help yourself get into business school. This is crazy!

I agree, if you want to go into politics, you're better off not going to law school for most places. You're definitely better off not going to HBS. Voters don't care about that stuff and for many of them, it's a negative. What is a huge positive is being a local business owner, which you currently are. Today's political narrative is all about job creation. Lawyers don't create jobs, CEOs don't create jobs. YOU create jobs because you are a small business owner. JAG would help, but it's extremely competitive.hdsoc wrote:owwo wrote:the long and short of my "why" - one of my end goals is to finish with an MBA from HBS...obviously my 2.1 isn't going to cut it. i hope to leverage my gpa from law school (conditional of course on me actually making the grades) to land a position with military jag (af/navy, in order of preference). my hope is that my work experience in the private sector, my high gpa from law school, and my service as a jag would be enough to tip the scales in my favor with HBS.

Just to give you a little perspective, the founder of this site went to law school and is now extremely successful in real estate. He doesn't regret going to law school, but he didn't need to go to do what he's doing. Why would you spend the time and money on law school, then JAG, then business school, only to end up right back where you are now? (If even that?)
If you're hell bent on law school though, apply to the green schools on this list if you want T1. Otherwise, blanket T2s in your area and someone will want your 168.

I just want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly: You want to go to law school to raise your GPA, then to JAG, then to HBS, then to politics? Why don't you just throw "become an astronaut" in there somewhere, it would fit right in to this bizarre plan.

those are my thoughts...granted my gpa's dismal, but how many other law school applicants bring my unique work experience/background as a co-founder and managing principal of a private commercial real estate investment firm with over $10 mil in assets?

Re: I love me some tier 2
although im a 0L who doesnt know anything,
going to law school so you can get admitted to business school seems like, if nothing else, just a huge waste of 3 years of your life and however much money your going to have to pay. you should really rethink that and maybe come up with some other options to reach your ultimate goal of HBS. and also add in the fact that you are banking on great grades, it just seems like a bad idea

Even assuming that a high law school GPA and JAG would dramatically help get you into HBS (which I'm not sure it even would), nobody should ever attend a law school banking on getting high grades. This includes getting high grades to transfer, to get an AIII clerkship, and, yes, to get into HBS; if your only reason for attending law school is to achieve a goal contingent upon high law school grades you will very likely be wasting 3 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars.owwo wrote:lol, i had no idea my "why" would be germaine as to whether or not i can get into law school.
to answer this and other questions- i want to remain in tx, particularly in houston, due to the fact that my personal investments in commercial property are here in houston.
the long and short of my "why" - one of my end goals is to finish with an MBA from HBS...obviously my 2.1 isn't going to cut it. i hope to leverage my gpa from law school (conditional of course on me actually making the grades) to land a position with military jag (af/navy, in order of preference). my hope is that my work experience in the private sector, my high gpa from law school, and my service as a jag would be enough to tip the scales in my favor with HBS.
sure, law school is not a prerequisite to enter in politics, but it doesn't hurt. Also being able to serve my country using my best abilities and strengths as a military jag, rather than as an enlisted soldier, would help further my goal towards becoming a public servant.
Others ITT have said it already: law school will likely not help (and may hurt) you in trying to achieve your goals. Yes you may have a poor undergrad GPA, but if HBS won't take you with your current credentials and accomplishments I say screw them; you're doing fine on your own. Continue to make money, network like crazy, and go on to politics without an HBS degree.

You guys overestimate the power of things outside LSAT and GPA. Sorry but those really are important. Splitters? Eh, you get some latitude, but not much.curiousnole wrote:I'm so sick of people suggesting LSN and LSP for non-traditional applicants. Those sites are COMPLETELY USELESS for someone in the op's position. He's asking for opinions here on a unique situation, with a unique split, come on now. If he went by the bare numbers, which is what these sites do, he definitely would not get the info he needs. The work experience plays a huge factor obviously.

I don’t think this was properly appreciated. I also agree not to take the booger sugar option off the table, especially for a future politician/astronautNoleMatt wrote:I just want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly: You want to go to law school to raise your GPA, then to JAG, then to HBS, then to politics? owwo... I don't know if other schools have something like this but I know Rutgers Newark has a place on the app where you choose to be judged on your numbers OR choose to be judged on your life experiences.....
THAT would work in your favor at RU or if anywhere else does that...

It's the astronaut thing keeping it alive.... But shouldn't he do that first and would that be enough to make up for the GPA?Br3v wrote:How is this thread even still a thread?
BTW, you don't need a law degree to be an officer in the military you just need a four year degree. So it is not really a choice of JAG or enlisted soldier..... (Not that there is anything wrong with enlisting of course....)
