173/3.38

Postby MikeTheWilliams » Thu Feb 02, 2012 7:32 pm

Good softs including an MA in economics and experience as researcher at a public policy institute at NYU Law. Good LORs. I applied in mid-November to:
Harvard
Stanford
Yale
Columbia
Chicago
NYU
Michigan
Boalt
Penn
Northwestern
Georgetown

I just got rejected at Boalt and NU. I'm starting to panic and think that I just grossly misjudged my chances and I'll end up with nothing. Any thoughts?

I'm guessing your experience isn't work experience, otherwise NU should've been a lock...

I'd guess In at Michigan, and Georgetown. Out at everything else.

You may need to ride the waitlist though. If you applied in October you may have had a slightly better shot - not sure.

It's work experience. I'm a full-time professional researcher (2 years) and I also have a year working in finance. I thought NU was a lock which is why I'm worried... I'm trying to tell myself that it was just an idiosyncrasy in the application process.

Agree with above. I think you have a good shot at Michigan and I'd be surprised if you didn't get Georgetown. If you haven't already, I'd add Why Xs/optional essays to your apps from Michigan on down.

We're about as close to number twins as you can be; check my stats in my profile. If you really don't get anything, I'd re-apply next year and pick a school to ED at.

I'm not surprised you didn't get Boalt, but NU is odd.

Might also be worth applying to at least one safety school in your region of choice (GW, Fordham, whatever). All the schools above range from targets to extreme reaches.

No reason to freak out, splitter apps are always unpredictable and you're never really guaranteed in anywhere within the T14. Boalt loves their GPAs so that's not really a surprise. NU's ding is more unexpected but it's hard to say that is really indicative of anything. There's no real reason to worry...not yet anyway.

If that is your complete list, I think you shot a bit high.

Granted, you should get 2 on that list...but "should" is no guarantee at all

Curious as to why no Virginia or Cornell (granted it's not the most splitter-friendly school)?

I already have a great job and I just didn't think it's worth it to me to go somewhere without good job prospects so I aimed a bit high. I was also advised by my boss, who's a law school professor, that I would be competitive at these schools (with HYS being a real reach but still worth the shot) even with knowledge of my GPA.

As for Cornell, Duke, and Virginia, I just had personal reasons for not wanting to apply. I'm just not interested.

Unfortunately your boss was mistaken and the T6 are out. Michigan is your next best bet but they can be unpredictable. Make sure to write a Why Michigan essay if you haven't already. Also write at least one of the optional essays for Penn to give yourself the best chance. Good luck.

I wrote a Why Michigan but I'll get started on a Why Penn.
Do you not think that a LOR from an NYU prof gives me at least a shot at NYU?

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately law professors and admin officers do not share the same perspective. I think you have a chance at nyu (altho it may involve a long waitlist) with your personal connections but I would definitely try to strengthen your other apps and everything above nyu is pretty much out.

I got nyu with almost your exact numbers but ED may have made the difference there

I'd say the chances are long, but the LOR might give you a small boost. In past years the only way to get in with a sub-3.4 without ED was to have a high 170s LSAT. Might be slightly different with the app decline this year, and if you get waitlisted it will be worth it to write an LOCI and hang on.

hdsoc had the benefit of an ED app, which is huge.

EDIT: After further review I'd say the odds at NYU are more like 50-50. Hopefully it breaks your way.

Mike-

Did you write a Why X or interview for NU? You have better numbers than me (172/3.26), although I've probably got your WE beat and NU is my number one....not gonna lie, I thought I had a decent chance until I read your post. Any idea why NU would have dinged you?

Try to get someone familiar with the law school application process to read over your application. Maybe your essays convey the wrong message or have an off-putting tone. Regardless, you may be reading too much into the Northwestern rejection since NU should be experiencing an upward surge in ED applications this cycle due to the new full scholarship for all ED admits program.

P.S. UC-Berkeley (Boalt) is the most unpredictable in the T-14, in my opinion.
