Chances for T14-- Minority

Post by think5375 » Thu Nov 24, 2011 10:09 pm

-Native American Male at Ivy League undergrad

-3.7, 168 LSAT (predicted-- 171-173 on practice tests)

- okay extracurricular activities: unique leadership position, peer mentoring, etc

- summer work experience: internship at world famous museum, law firm one summer as well

- will submit diversity statement - originally from southwestern state that is very underrepresented and very full of native americans. have been and remain actively involved in native american activities

- will have good letters of recommendation

want to go straight out of undergrad as there are few job prospects for me anyway.

What do you think? this is for next year. Very interested in NYU (may ED), Harvard, Columbia, Yale, etc

Nice. Anyway, with your NA status, I think you's in good shape. Apply broadly, though, since your cycle may be difficult to predict. I don't know about HYS, but NYU is probably a strong possibility. But apply anywhere you have an interest in going. Best of luck.

Great. I will try my best not to choke on the LSAT too.

Come back when you get your actual score, but chances look pretty decent. Remember that you will be applying pretty late if you're applying this cycle, so if your results are less stellar than you would like you should consider waiting until next year.

Your stats look good, but you probably need to up the LSAT a little bit. One of my friends/classmate (also an Ivy) got into NYU with 3.6ish GPA and 171. So, GPA-wise you're definitely alright, but you'll probably want to get around a 170 to stand a good chance for NYU.

You need an actual, not a practice, LSAT score. However, as a NA applicant, if you did score a 168, then Columbia is an option since this law school is seeking NA applicants.

Is Columbia seeking NA applicants more than HYS? NYU? I believe I remember hearing about some sort of Native American law program they have.. maybe this has something to do with it.

Every school wants NAs, though some schools might be want them more desperately than others. As long as you don't choke on the LSAT, you should be applying to all of the T6 (as well as some safeties) anyway.

Yes, Columbia was & is determined to increase NA enrollment since last cycle according to someone who works in their admissions office.

P.S. The advice in the post above is too generic & mostly incorrect. Certain law schools have programs targeting NAs & offer relevant cousework for those wishing to practice NA law.

Regardless, you'll need an actual LSAT score before determining where to apply. NA admissions is unlike other minority admissions. However, if you do score 168 or higher on the LSAT, then you should be admitted to several Top 17 law schools assuming an otherwise strong application.

YES. OP, if you get a 168 or better you have an amazing shot at Harvard (171 = guaranteed), some shot at Yale, and are for sure into CCN. NA is definitely one of the bigger URM boosts; LSP should never be trusted to accurately predict URM cycles.

You are going to have an awesome cycle.

(Just make sure you attach either a DS or list your tribal affiliation on the application in order to get the boost.)

Also, don't ED anywhere. And don't hesitate to retake the LSAT if you don't hit your target goal of 168. If you do make it into the high 160's, only apply to the T14. Lower T14 schools are safeties for you.

Thanks. I should be able to hit 168+, I have been studying off and on for about a year. So only apply to top 14 if i hit 168? What about a 'safety' like USC? UCLA? Texas?

Thanks.

You could have some safeties; but as a NA with a 168 and that GPA you will not need them.

Can't hurt if you want to practice in California or Texas. If you've got a fee waiver I would apply, but I probably wouldn't spend the $$ if you don't get one for some reason.

Come back with a real score, but if you hit 167, you are in good shape for the T10 and a 170 is probably a lock for T6
