170/158 3.66 ADVICE PLEASE

Postby bumblebeebuzz » Mon Oct 24, 2011 7:17 pm

I feel like I'm in a really precarious position for the T-14's. Obviously, Columbia is a pipe dream-- (though it does say "consider" on law school predictor with 29% BUT I'm below both medians) but it is/was my first choice. The question is would I be wasting an ED on Columbia, or should I go ahead and ED to UPenn my second choice school (which is a "consider" with 53%, below gpa median and at LSAT median)? I've heard rumors that applications will be way down this year, and I'm wondering if this will up my chances at Columbia. What other T-14's should I really consider? Thank you so much in advance for any and all advice!

Yeah, your chances at Columbia are very low, even with ED. Where else would you consider attending?

Penn or UVA are you best bets for ED if you're comfortable with ED to either of them. Columbia would be a waste.

I'd be open for any of the T-14, but I would love to remain in the East Coast/Midwest/Virginia. I figured that Columbia would be a waste... I think I'm feeling a little overwhelmed because I just got the 170 today and considering my first score was a 158 I did not want to get my hopes up. Are there any schools in the top 20 in which I could get a decent scholarship? I'm not horribly debt-adverse, but I'm still having a hard time between deciding between scholarship money at lower ranked school versus paying sticker at a T-14. Thanks so much for your comments!

You're safe for $$ at WUSTL and similar T20s.

Depends on your definition of "decent". You're probably in line for 50-66% scholarships from Vandy and WUSTL.

Thank you for the replies! Considering a number of factors including distance from family, location, programs that interest me, and job placement I'm leaning towards an ED at Penn.

Is there a decent possibility of getting UPenn without ED? I'm still a little hesitant about ED, but if it's my only good chance at getting into Penn then I guess I'll have to do it.

You will probably get waitlisted unless you ED. You are at LSAT median and below GPA median by a decent amount (0.2 points).

Thanks for the input. When I look at LSN-- I definitely see non-URM with the same or similar numbers that are getting in and some that are getting in with small scholarships--is this pretty rare? It's hard to tell exactly how representative LSN really is.

LSN shows 4 accepts, 2 with scholarship. Of the 2 with scholarships, one is URM and the other got into Berkeley with a 3.5 so he must have had some stellar soft factors.

Of the two others, one says "numbers slightly fudged until cycle is over", which I am guessing means the person had a higher LSAT but recorded it incorrectly because they were worried about privacy (this happens a lot on LSN). The other person has no notes and no identifying info, so no story there.

I think you have to look at the overall outcome. Of 9 non-urm applicants with 170 and a 3.5 to 3.7 gpa, only 3 were admitted and one probably had an LSAT higher than 170. So the real odds look like 2 out of 9, which isn't so good.

Thank you so much for taking the time to show me that. I just discovered that search function earlier today and will most definitely be applying ED. Thank you again for your input.

No problem. Good luck with your applications.
