3.1/173

Postby leafs1315 » Sun Aug 28, 2011 6:46 pm

LSAT: 173

UGPA: 3.1 at Top 5 public school
Major: Biomedical Engineering, minors in Physics and Chemistry
Extra: Lots of extracurricular activities and volunteering

Graduate GPA: 3.9
Degree: MS in BME
Good LORs

Internship with Patent lawyer

Very strong upward trend throughout undergrad and grad school

I would like to stay in the northeast, however I would also like to go to the best school that I can
possibly get into. My UGPA isn’t strong, but as I stated above, there is a strong upward trend that also continues in grad school.
I’m hoping that my LORs and my PS will help address my UGPA and make it clear that I’m a lot more mature and can handle the stresses of law school.

Thanks

If you're not 100% set on staying in the Northeast, ED'ing to Northwestern could be a smart play.

University of Penn
edit: this will still be a pretty big reach though

University of Penn is a new one.

OP: Penn is probably your best bet for your goals if you apply ED. I think your GPA is a tad too low for them, but they have taken some GPAs below 3.3 in recent years so it's a possibility. Can't imagine there is any hope regular decision though.

Michigan is a better bet to dip down to 3.1, but they are obviously further away from the Northeast.

Cornell seems to emphasize GPA more than their peers, but it would be worth the app fee. Georgetown gives you the best odds within the T-14.

What do you think my chances would be if did an ED at NYU, or would it better to use the ED for UPenn or Northwestern?

Thanks

ED to NYU would be a waste. I'd ED Penn. Odds aren't great, but it's within the realm of possibility. You should be in at Northwestern RD if you have post-undergrad work experience, and you'll almost certainly be rejected without it.

Of course, you should be an auto-admit if you apply ED to UVA, and they get back to you within two weeks. If you go that route and for some reason it doesn't work out, you can then ED Penn.

Well I went to grad school straight from undergrad, so the only work experience I have is working in a lab while at undergrad and the internship with the patent lawyer, which I am currently doing. So based on that, I would probably be rejected at Northwestern RD right?

Yeah I would think you'd be rejected, but it's far from a guarantee. If you look at this page you'll see that 97% of the 2010 entering class had work experience of at least 1 year, and 88% had two or more years. That said, they can be somewhat flexible on the definition of work experience. Depending on that internship and your lab experience you might be able to pull it off. Expected full time work experience between now and fall of 2012 would also help. Northwestern this year will be an uphill battle for you but all is not lost; if the rest of your apps don't work out you can always work for a year and then re-apply.

This and what everyone else said. My vote would be to do this:

Besides UVA, do you know how long it would take UPenn, Northwestern or Georgetown to get back to me if I did ED? I know Georgetown has a late ED, so would it be possible to do an ED to UPenn, then if I don't get accepted do an ED to Georgetown?

Thanks

According to this: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=162867, Penn ED decisions were handed out last year at the end of November.

I was notified in early-mid December. I remember because it was right before my birthday.

You've got a shot at UVA ED, so take it. File your application the first day you can and just hope you get lucky.

Penn is a large reach, but GULC is a better bet if you "need" top 14. Michigan probably won't touch you with the GPA, but if you're lucky they may bite.

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyways. Does it matter than I'm doing my MS at Drexel, will that have any pull at UPenn, since they are basically right next to each other?

Thanks

No. Irrelevant masters school is irrelevant.
